This is the ultimate airliner thriller. Skeptical? Consider this: After losing two of its three engines, a jumbo jet attempts a forced landing in a severe storm. One passenger dies, but the crew and the rest of the passengers survive. There's jut one hitch: the place they chose for a landing is the snow-covered summit of a 14,000-foot mountain. They're in extreme peril of dying of exposure and lack of oxygen, and are perched over the edge of an abyss. A mountain climbing team, also stranded in the storm, makes it up to render assistance, but they, too, are stuck up there with no food, no medical supplies, and worst of all, NO WAY DOWN. Janet Gordon, sister of the downed aircraft's pilot, and chief operations officer of the airline, has to deal with a blackmail threat, vicious media attacks, and the airline's imminent bankruptcy, while trying to get help up to her brother and his doomed passengers. You may want to tape all your fingernails before reading this page-turner. Not for the faint-hearted!
A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries 1950-1975 is the first publication to deal with the postwar avant-garde in the Nordic countries. The essays cover a wide range of avant-garde manifestations in arts and culture: literature, the visual arts, architecture and design, film, radio, television and the performative arts. It is the first major historical work to consider the Nordic avant-garde in a transnational perspective that includes all the arts and to discuss the role of the avant-garde not only within the aesthetic field but in a broader cultural and political context: The cultural politics, institutions and new cultural geographies after World War II, new technologies and media, performative strategies, interventions into everyday life and tensions between market and counterculture.
Cerebral veins contain about 70% of the total cerebral blood volume, but cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) occurs about a thousand times less often than arterial stroke. CVT affects mostly young adults and children, and in about one quarter of cases the cause remains unknown. Written by international experts, this publication is dealing with epidemiology, risk factors, coagulation disorders, clinical presentation - especially focusing on headache, current neuroradiological treatment, complications and long-term prognosis of CVT. The book covers the full spectrum of CVT pathogenesis and offers a new and effective approach to improve earlier diagnosis, recognize new risk factors and to identify the most severe manifestations, which require more aggressive treatments. Neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and all physicians who are involved in the care of patients with CVT will welcome this publication as a useful and up-to-date clinical guide.
The Permanent Commission and International Association on Occupational Health (PCIAOH) established in 1969 a Subcommittee on the Toxicology of Metals under the chairmanship of Lars Friberg. This committee, which later was named the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals, has organized a number of previous meetings that have led to publications in three major areas of metal toxicology: a preliminary meeting in Slanchev Bryag, Bulgaria in- 1971, followed by a meeting in 1972 in Buenos Aires, Argentina which produced two reports (Dukes and Friberg, 1971; Task Group on Metal Accumulation, 1973), that discussed the metabolism of metals with special reference to absorption, excretion and...
