THE SUNDAY TIMES #1 BESTSELLER The great airborne battle for the bridges in 1944 by Britain's Number One bestselling historian and author of the classic Stalingrad 'Our greatest chronicler of the Second World War' - Robert Fox, Evening Standard ______________ On 17 September 1944, General Kurt Student, the founder of Nazi Germany's parachute forces, heard the growing roar of aeroplane engines. He went out on to his balcony above the flat landscape of southern Holland to watch the air armada of Dakotas and gliders carrying the British 1st Airborne and the American 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions. He gazed up in envy at this massive demonstration of paratroop power. Operation Market Garden, ...

Arnhem - it was the last major battle lost by the British Army, lost not by the men who fought there but by the overconfidence of generals, faulty planning and the failure of a relieving force given too great a task. If the operation of which Arnhem formed a part had been successful, the outcome of the war and the history of post-war Europe would have been greatly altered. Yet is it worth another book? I had fulfilled all my literary ambitions by researching and writing thirteen full-length books and was ready to retire from that laborious craft when Peter van Gorsel, head of Penguin's Dutch office, asked me to write a book on Arnhem for the fiftieth anniversary in 1994. It was the first time that my publishers had requested a book; all previous subjects had been my choice. I eventually agreed for several reasons. I had not previously researched and written about the British Army in the Second World War and had not previously done any work in Holland; so two fresh fields were opened up to me. I also felt that the fighting in and around Arnhem had still not been described in the detail that it merited.

With the Red Devils at Arnhem

The Battle of Arnhem remains a much-studied and discussed battle, with an uninterrupted flow of books being published about it. Helion are bringing back into print a fascinating eyewitness account that has remained overlooked since it was last published shortly after the battle itself. The 1st Polish Parachute Brigade played both an important and controversial role at Arnhem. The author, a Pole himself, was attached to the Brigade, saw action at Arnhem and managed to escape capture and return to Allied lines. He penned his account within weeks of returning, and as a result With the Red Devils at Arnhem has a tremendous freshness and appeal sometimes lacking in material written years afterwards. He offers a vivid insight into the experiences of the Poles at Arnhem, written in an exciting and lively manner. The Helion reprint has been expanded by airborne forces' expert and author Niall Cherry's additional notes providing further information and context. This book is a forgotten gem within the canon of Arnhem literature.

In this long-awaited book, Robert Kershaw follows up his best-selling account of Operation Market Garden--It Never Snows in September--to focus on the experiences of Dutch civilians and British and German soldiers in one street while fighting to survive at the heart of one of the most intense battles of World War II. He tells the story from the perspective of what could be seen or heard from the Utrechtseweg, a road that runs seven kilometers from the Arnhem railway station west to Oosterbeek. This stretch of road saw virtually every major event during the fighting for Arnhem--the legendary "Bridge Too Far"--during September 1944. The story is about the disintegration of a wealthy Dutch subu...

In September 1944, the Allies launched Operation Market Garden, with the intention to bypass the Siegfried Line and attack the Ruhr. Paratroopers were dropped in the Netherlands to secure bridges and towns along the Allied axis of advance. They landed at Arnhem to secure the Nederrijn. The British forces faced unexpected resistance from elements of the 9th SS and 10th SS Panzer Divisions. This is a detailed account of Operation Market Garden and its unexpected consequences in Arnhem.
