A Carefully Planned Accident

In July 1858, Count Cavour, prime minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont, met Napoleon III to plot the provocation of war with Austria, the result of which would be the complete expulsion of Habsburg power from Italy and the creation of an Italian confederation. This work describes the means whereby diplomacy was utilized to precipitate the war and traces its continuing role during and after the hostilities.

Zion Before Zionism, 1838-1880

This book studies the interaction of the European, Turkish, and Palestinian natives for a forty-two year period, just prior to when the great Jewish immigration to Palestine began. It examines the interplay between the native Palestinian population, the essentially foreign Turkish government imposed on them, and the aggressive ambitions of Christian nations represented by their consuls. Most important of all, 1838 marks the first year in which the Turks recognized the right of foreign non-Moslems to lease property for permanent residence in a city sacred to Islam. It was to be another twelve years before the purchase of property by foreign infidels became possible at the Holy City. It was to be a full twenty years before the Turks codified a Land Registry Law in 1858. Nevertheless, the mere beginning of permanent residence at Jerusalem for foreign Jews and Christians makes 1838 a milestone year. It is, therefore, important for any study of what is today modern Israel to examine the years 1838-1880. Those crucial forty-two years form the unique and essential incubative time period without which Zionism could never have prospered in Zion.

Houses of Study

Houses of Study is an eloquent memoir of a Jewish woman?s life and her efforts to reconcile the traditions of her faith with her belief in women?s equality and the pull of modern American living. Ilana M. Blumberg traces her path from a childhood immersed in Hebrew and classical Judaic texts alongside Anglo-American novels and biographies to a womanhood where the two literatures suddenly represent mutually exclusive possibilities for life. Set in ?houses of study,? from a Jewish grammar school and high school to a Jerusalem yeshiva for women to a secular American university, her intimate and poignant memoir asks what happens when the traditional Jewish ideal of learning asserts itself in a woman directed by that same tradition toward a life of modesty, early marriage, and motherhood. This Bison Books edition is updated with discussion questions.
