The Two-Body Force in Nuclei

The idea of this symposium grew out of our discussions on the need to review the advances that had been made in the theoretical description of inelastic scattering reactions in the last few years. Since a microscopic description of inelastic scattering uses realistic effective interactions, we felt that it was appropriate to begin such a summary with a discussion of the free two-nucleon force. However as we thought further about this review, it became increasingly apparent that a rather more ambitious program linking the free two-nucleon force and nuclear matter calculations both to shell model calculations and to reaction theory, would be appropriate and perhaps even necessary to do full ju...

Nuclear, Particle, and Many Body Physics, Volume I is a collection of scientific papers dedicated to the memory of Amos de-Shalit, a distinguished physicist. The book contains chapters that discuss various studies in the field of nuclear and particle physics. The text covers such topics as chemical binding in classical Coulomb lattices; algebraic treatment of subsidiary conditions in dual resonance models; the complete Schwarzschild solution; the investigation of nucleon-nucleon correlations by means of high-energy scattering; and some aspects on the magnetic-dipole moments of states in near-spherical nuclei. Theoretical, experimental, and nuclear physicists, researchers, and students in the field of physics will find the book invaluable.

With the appearance of Volume 3 of our series the review articles them selves can speak for the nature of the series. Our initial aim of charting the field of nuclear physics with some regularity and completeness is, hopefully, beginning to be established. We are greatly indebted to the willing coopera tion of many authors which has kept the series on schedule. By means of the "stream" technique on which our series is based - in which articles emerge from a flow of future articles at the convenience of the authors-the articles appear in this volume without any special coordination of topics. The topics range from the interaction of pions with nuclei to direct reactions in deformed nuclei. There is a great number of additional topics which the series hopes to include. Some of these are indicated by our list of future articles. Some have so far not appeared on our list because the topics have been reviewed re cently in other channels. Much of our series has originated from the sug gestions of our colleagues. We continue to welcome such aid and we continue to need, particularly, more suggestions about experimentalists who might write articles on experimental topics.

THE STORY: In 1991, in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, an Hasidic man's car jumped a curb, killing Gavin Cato, a seven-year-old black child. Later, in what appears to have been an act of retaliation on the part of a faction of the black comm

Photopion Nuclear Physics

This volume consists of twelve review articles and a variety of short contributions which are based on lectures presented at the International Symposium on Photopion Nuclear Physics. The review articles were submitted after the sym posium, and there was considerable editing and cross referen cing with the aim of achieving a greater overall unity than ordinarily found in conference proceedings. Photopion Nuclear Physics, as the name suggests, combines two of the most active areas of current intermediate energy nuclear physics research - electromagnetic phenomena as studied by means of electron scattering and photonuclear pro cesses, and mesonic effects in nuclei. The potential value of photop...

Particles and Nuclei

"This book is devoted to phenomena that are of interest to both particle and nuclear physicists. The topics include nucleon structure (including spin structure), electron, neutrino, and hadron scattering from nucleons and nuclei, strange matter, the standard model, theory of nucleons and nuclei from both the QCD and nucleon-meson viewpoints, new experimental techniques, and new facilities."--Publisher's website.
