Differential Equations, Chaos and Variational Problems

This collection of original articles and surveys written by leading experts in their fields is dedicated to Arrigo Cellina and James A. Yorke on the occasion of their 65th birthday. The volume brings the reader to the border of research in differential equations, a fast evolving branch of mathematics that, besides being a main subject for mathematicians, is one of the mathematical tools most used both by scientists and engineers.

The international summer school on Calculus of Variations and Geometric Evolution Problems was held at Cetraro, Italy, 1996. The contributions to this volume reflect quite closely the lectures given at Cetraro which have provided an image of a fairly broad field in analysis where in recent years we have seen many important contributions. Among the topics treated in the courses were variational methods for Ginzburg-Landau equations, variational models for microstructure and phase transitions, a variational treatment of the Plateau problem for surfaces of prescribed mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds - both from the classical point of view and in the setting of geometric measure theory.

This volume contains the expanded versions of the lectures given by the authors at the C.I.M.E. instructional conference held in Cetraro, Italy, from July 12 to 19, 1997. The papers collected here are broad surveys of the current research in the arithmetic of elliptic curves, and also contain several new results which cannot be found elsewhere in the literature. Owing to clarity and elegance of exposition, and to the background material explicitly included in the text or quoted in the references, the volume is well suited to research students as well as to senior mathematicians.

Financial Mathematics is an exciting, emerging field of application. The five sets of course notes in this book provide a bird's eye view of the current "state of the art" and directions of research. For graduate students it will therefore serve as an introduction to the field while reseachers will find it a compact source of reference. The reader is expected to have a good knowledge of the basic mathematical tools corresponding to an introductory graduate level and sufficient familiarity with probabilistic methods, in particular stochastic analysis.

Implicit Partial Differential Equations

Nonlinear partial differential equations has become one of the main tools of mod ern mathematical analysis; in spite of seemingly contradictory terminology, the subject of nonlinear differential equations finds its origins in the theory of linear differential equations, and a large part of functional analysis derived its inspiration from the study of linear pdes. In recent years, several mathematicians have investigated nonlinear equations, particularly those of the second order, both linear and nonlinear and either in divergence or nondivergence form. Quasilinear and fully nonlinear differential equations are relevant classes of such equations and have been widely examined in the mathematic...

In the Footsteps of Giorgio Philip Szegö

This book offers essential information on the life and career of the recently deceased Giorgio P. Szegö, particularly his important contributions in various areas of mathematical programming and applications to financial markets. It highlights the developments in the fields of stability theory and dynamical systems brought about by his work in the early 1960s and 1970s, then moves on to address his valuable contributions to portfolio theory in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and, finally, examines his work in the field of risk management and the role of financial regulation in the late 1990s. The book explores Giorgio P. Szegö’s contributions in diverse research areas ranging from global optimization, theory of stability and dynamical systems to applications of financial mathematics to portfolio theory, risk measurement and financial regulation. It also covers his consulting work for such major international institutions as the IMF, World Bank and OECD.

These lecture notes by very authoritative scientists survey recent advances of mathematics driven by industrial application showing not only how mathematics is applied to industry but also how mathematics has drawn benefit from interaction with real-word problems. The famous David Report underlines that innovative high technology depends crucially for its development on innovation in mathematics. The speakers include three recent presidents of ECMI, one of ECCOMAS (in Europe) and the president of SIAM.

Stochastic PDE's and Kolmogorov Equations in Infinite Dimensions

Kolmogorov equations are second order parabolic equations with a finite or an infinite number of variables. They are deeply connected with stochastic differential equations in finite or infinite dimensional spaces. They arise in many fields as Mathematical Physics, Chemistry and Mathematical Finance. These equations can be studied both by probabilistic and by analytic methods, using such tools as Gaussian measures, Dirichlet Forms, and stochastic calculus. The following courses have been delivered: N.V. Krylov presented Kolmogorov equations coming from finite-dimensional equations, giving existence, uniqueness and regularity results. M. Röckner has presented an approach to Kolmogorov equations in infinite dimensions, based on an LP-analysis of the corresponding diffusion operators with respect to suitably chosen measures. J. Zabczyk started from classical results of L. Gross, on the heat equation in infinite dimension, and discussed some recent results.

Recent Advances in Differential Equations contains the proceedings of a meeting held at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, on August 24-28, 1978 under the auspices of the U.S. Army Research Office. The papers review the status of research in the field of differential equations (ordinary, partial, and functional). Both theoretical aspects (differential operators, periodic solutions, stability and bifurcation, asymptotic behavior of solutions, etc.) and problems arising from applications (reaction-diffusion equations, control problems, heat flow, etc.) are discussed. Comprised of 33 chapters, this book first examines non-cooperative trajectories of n-person dyn...
