The tools of operations research (OR)--optimization, simulation, game theory, and others--are increasingly applied to the entire range of problems encountered by civil and environmental engineers. In this groundbreaking text/reference, the world's leading experts describe sophisticated OR opplications across the spectrum of environmental and civil engineering specialties, addressing problems encountered in both operation and design.
"This study serves' as an introduction to the important economic considerations that are necessary for an assessment of the potential for solar heating and cooling in the United States. The first chapter introduces the technology that is used to tap solar energy for residential and commercial applications and illustrates the potential significance of this energy source on a national scale. A methodology for assessing the economic feasibility cf solar heating and cooling is presented in the second chapter with the results of a study of material, labor, marketing, and engineering costs of solar equipment. The third chapter applies the methodology to a study of the economic feasibility of residential solar heating in 20 cities. The potential for reductions in the cost of solar equipment through mass production and technology improvements, and the effects of increases in conventional fuel prices are included in the feasibility assessments. Finally, national security, environmental and institutional considerations are discussed to place the economic assessment in its proper perspective."--(Author's Abstract on ERIC site).
Emerging from the world of commercial art and product styling, design has now become completely integrated into human life. Its marks are all around us, from the chairs we sit on to the Web sites on our computer screens. One of the pioneers of design studies and still one of its most distinguished practitioners, Victor Margolin here offers a timely meditation on design and its study at the turn of the millennium and charts new directions for the future development of both fields. Divided into sections on the practice and study of design, the essays in The Politics of the Artificial cover such topics as design history, design research, design as a political tool, sustainable design, and the p...

Energy, Resources and Environment documents the first U.S.-China Conference and discusses the concerns about the world's energy situation, such as its resource, environmental effects, and possible alternative sources. The book is comprised of 72 chapters including the keynote address, five lecture papers, and 66 technical papers that are organized according to its contents, specifically the type of energy it discusses. The text begins with the keynote address, and then discusses the plenary and technical papers. The plenary papers discuss the importance of energy, resources, environment, and future development. The technical papers cover the technological advancement of alternative energy so...
