Eddington

This book is based on two lectures given in Cambridge by Professor Chandrasckhar to mark the centenary of the birth of Arthur Stanley Eddington. The text describes Eddington's major contributions to astrophysics and to general relativity. The approach is not technical, although it will mainly be of interest to professionals in astronomy, applied mathematics and the history of modern astronomy.

Science and the Unseen World

Physicist and astronomer Arthur Eddington tested Einstein's Theory of Relativity at an eclipse in 1919. A lifelong Quaker, his 1929 Swarthmore Lecture explores how science and religion define and look at reality. ‘You will understand the true spirit neither of science nor of religion unless seeking is placed in the forefront.’ ‘He puts a strong line against simplistic reductionism in relation to our minds . He emphasizes that when we ask the question, “What are we to think of it all? What is it all about?,” the answer must embrace but not be limited to the scientific answer. His lecture explores this in a delightful way, that remains fully relevant today.’ — Prof. George Ellis 'The attitude of the scientist, here so admirably explained, is the attitude, also, of the mystic. Experience, to both, is what matters most.”’- The Sufi Quarterly, 1929.

This is the definitive biography of the great astronomer, mathematician and philosopher Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington, which was highly praised on its first publication in 1956. It has long been out of print, and we now offer it in a fresh edition. In the 1920s Alice Vibert Douglas was that unusual creature for the day, a lady student of astronomy, and she was one of Eddington's pupils at Cambridge. She knew the great man personally and was able to paint a uniquely vivid portrait.Eddington was a super-giant in an age of intellectual giants in physics and astronomy. He was one of the first men to understand General Relativity and he evangelized that new theory to the English-speaking scientific...

Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944) was an English physicist and astronomer. He was also a successful popularizer of science. Eddington was the first to theorize that fusion of hydrogen into helium was the Sun's source of energy, a key development in astrophysics. He was an early expounder and advocate of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. In 1919, he lead an expedition to Príncipe which provided key confirmation of Einstein. "Space, Time and Gravitation: An Outline of the General Relativity Theory" is brief summary of the ideas and concepts underlying general relativity. Although written primarily for a lay audience, it includes mathematical descriptions of several key concepts. Eddington also provides an account of his expedition to Principe and its results. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

Einstein has succeeded in separating far more completely than hitherto the share of the observer and the share of external nature in the things we see happen. The perception of an object by an observer depends on his own situation and circumstances; for example, distance will make it appear smaller and dimmer. We make allowance for this almost unconsciously in interpreting what we see. But it now appears that the allowance made for the motion of the observer has hitherto been too crudea fact overlooked because in practice all observers share nearly the same motion, that of the earth. Physical space and time are found to be closely bound up with this motion of the observer; and only an amorph...
