Kapor argues that explanations of international relations in Asia in the post-Second World War period have relied too much on the Cold War as a key explanatory factor, and have not given enough emphasis to the useful concepts of 'regional power formation', 'conflict formation' and 'conflict resolution'. The author outlines these concepts and goes on to elaborate on them, and to apply them to three key Asian regions - northeast, southeast, and south Asia - discussing practical strategic issues in an historical perspective and arguing that these concepts, and other concepts which he discusses, are extremely helpful in making sense of the complex pattern of international relations in Asia.

The New International Politics of South Asia

Revised and substantially updated, The new international politics of South Asia argues that the politics of the individual states of South Asia cannot be understood without reference to the regional and international context. The author emphasises the need to consider rapid political, social and economic change in the context of debates over ethnic identity and changes within the international system following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Recent changes have opened up new opportunities for the region, but have also exposed specific weaknesses. The author discusses India’s evolving relationship with the international economic system, economic reforms in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, as well as key issues such as the regional position on the NPT treaty, the Comprehensive Test Ban treaty, environmental issues, and the post-Cold War world order.

Technoscientific Imaginaries

What is it like to be a scientist at the end of the twentieth century? How have shifts in power and in assumptions about knowledge affected scientific practice? Who are the people behind the new technologies, and how do they address the difficult moral and professional issues during a time of global change? Techno-Scientific Imaginaries explores these and other important questions at the approach of the new millennium. In these penetrating essays, twenty-four distinguished contributors from a broad range of fields present the voices of the scientists themselves—through interviews, conversations, and memoirs. We hear from Lithuanian physicists who discuss science after Communism and their o...
