Bioactive Nutrients as Dietary Supplements and Therapeutic Agents

Nutraceutical, during recent decades, has emerged as a new term in the scientific literature. Synonymously used to the term nutraceuticals in literature are dietary supplements, bioactive nutrients, functional foods, etc. This book considers how nutraceutical substances are regulated in different countries; the physiological role of dietary fibers in relation to their claimed health benefits within the scope of functional foods, dietary supplements, and nutraceuticals; prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics as nutraceuticals; and the nature of a large number of phytochemicals as nutraceuticals. The book also touts fruits and vegetables as Nature’s multinutraceutical capsules, as evidenced from their beneficial health effects emerging from epidemiological studies on such diseases as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular, cancer, osteoporosis, rheumatism, diverticulitis, etc. In light of this, international launching of campaigns on health benefits as “go for 2-5” daily servings of fruits and vegetables is also considered.

This timely collection offers new perspectives on Muslim-Christian encounters in Africa. Working against political and scholarly traditions that keep Muslims and Christians apart, the essays in this multidisciplinary volume locate African Muslims and Christians within a common analytical frame. In a series of historical and ethnographic case studies from across the African continent, the authors consider the multiple ways Muslims and Christians have encountered each other, borrowed or appropriated from one another, and sometimes also clashed. Contributors recast assumptions about the making and transgressing of religious boundaries, Christian-Muslim relations, and conversion. This engaging collection is a long overdue attempt to grapple with the multi-faceted and changing encounters of Muslims and Christians in Africa.

The volume contains highly original articles on Islamic history, law, and thought, each either proposing new hypotheses or readjusting existing ones. The contributions range from studies in the formulation of the pre-Islamic Arabian calendar to notes on the "blood-money group" in Islamic law, and to transformations in Arabic logic in the post-Avicennan period. Prepared by former students of Michael A. Cook, to whom this volume is dedicated, these studies not only shed new light on the development of the Islamic scholarly tradition from various perspectives, but together they also represent the honoree's vast, profound, and continuing impact on the field. This collection of highly empirical articles is intended for scholars and students specializing in various subfields within Islamic Studies.
