Extrasolar Planets
This 2007 volume presents the lectures from the sixteenth Winter School of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, which was dedicated to extrasolar planets. Research into extrasolar planets is one of the most exciting fields of astrophysics, and the past decade has seen a research leap from speculations on the existence of planets orbiting other stars to the discovery of around 200 planets to date. The book covers a wide range of issues, from the state-of-the-art observational techniques used to detect extrasolar planets, to the characterizations of these planets, and the techniques used in the remote detection of life. It also looks at the insights we can gain from our own Solar System, and how we can apply them. The contributors, all of high-standing in the field, provide a balanced and varied introduction to extrasolar planets for research astronomers and graduate students, bridging theoretical developments and observational advances.

This volume contains the Proceedings of the Fifth Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (Sociedad Espanola de Astronomfa, SEA). The meeting was held at the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha in Toledo, from September 9 to 13, 2002. The event brought together 219 participants who pre sented their latest results in many different subjects. Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics IV
This volume documents the contributions presented at the Seventh Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (Sociedad Española de Astronomía, SEA). The event bought together 301 participants who presented 161 contributed talks and 120 posters, the greatest numbers up to now. The fact that most exciting items of the current astronomical research were addressed in the meeting proofs the good health of the SEA, a consolidated organization founded fifteen years ago in Barcelona. Two plenary sessions of the meeting were devoted to the approved entrance of Spain as a full member of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and to the imminent first light of the greatest telescope in the world, the GTC (Gran Telescopio de Canarias), milestones that will certainly lead the Spanish Astronomy in the next future.
O ABCD da Astronomia e Astrofísica
A astronomia constitui um ponto de encontro da física com a matemática e com outras disciplinas. O presente trabalho oferece uma visão atualizada de praticamente todas as áreas da astronomia, com especial ênfase na astrofísica estelar, cosmologia e a nascente astrobiologia. Embora o público-alvo principal sejam os jovens de 7a e 8a séries e, particularmente, do ensino médio, o texto pode ser de utilidade para os professores de ciências e qualquer pessoa com um mínimo de formação básica nesses níveis. O nível de complexidade matemática foi mantido no mínimo, mas sem fazer concessões ao rigor expositivo. Material auxiliar de interesse foi incluído nos sete apêndices do livro. Tópicos que formam parte obrigatória dos conteúdos escolares, tais como a constituição da Terra e outros, foram tratados e revisados desde um ponto de vista bastante geral e integrada aos outros assuntos.
