This book shows the advantages of using different perspectives and scientific backgrounds for developing support technologies that are integrated into daily life. It highlights the interaction between people and technology as a key factor for achieving this integration and discusses relevant methods, concepts, technologies, and applications suitable for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration. The relationship between humans and technology has become much more inclusive and interdependent. This generates a number of technical, ethical, social, and practical issues. By gathering contributions from scholars from heterogeneous research fields, such as biomechanics, various branches of engineering, the social sciences, information science, psychology, and philosophy, this book is intended to provide answers to the main questions arising when support technologies such as assistance systems, wearable devices, augmented reality, and/or robot-based systems are constructed, implemented, interfaced and/or evaluated across different application contexts.

Das Handbuch bietet einen Überblick über die technischen, historischen, sozialen, medialen, kulturwissenschaftlichen und technikphilosophischen Dimensionen verschiedener Typen von Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion sowie über deren ethische Implikationen. Dabei werden zum einen wissenshistorische Analysen der Diskurse in Philosophie, Literatur und Technik sowie ihrer medialen, apparativen und literalen Praktiken von ca. 1870 bis in die Gegenwart verfolgt (Historischer Teil). Zum anderen wird das komplexe Verhältnis von Menschen und Maschinen anhand von zentralen Begriffs- und Problemfeldern dargestellt und kritisch befragt (Systematischer Teil).
Neue Impulse für die soziologische Kommunikationstheorie
Während die empirische Kommunikationsforschung durch die Entwicklungen des Internets und anderer mobiler Kommunikationsformen an Bedeutung weiter zunimmt, befindet sich die Kommunikationstheorie auf der Suche nach neuen Impulsen. Die Beiträger dieses Bandes gehen davon aus, dass sich eine produktive Weiterentwicklung der soziologischen Kommunikationstheorie nur bewerkstelligen lässt, wenn man sie öffnet, indem man sie mit empirischen Widerständen konfrontiert oder Verknüpfungsmöglichkeiten mit anderen Theorieparadigmen erarbeitet.
Grenzen von Netzwerken
Während Systeme aufgrund ihrer Selbstreferenzialität über klare Grenzen verfügen, wird in der Netzwerkforschung noch kontrovers über den Status von Netzwerkgrenzen diskutiert. Als dynamische, mit Zentren und Peripherien ausgestattete, heterogene Gebilde können sich Netzwerke nicht über ihre Grenzen definieren, sondern durch das, was in ihren Aktivitätszentren passiert. Der Sammelband stellt die aktuelle Debatte vor und präsentiert die dabei bezogenen Standpunkte, wonach Netzwerke gar keine oder zumindest unscharfe Grenzen besitzen, diese zunächst narrativ durch die Akteure erzeugt werden und lediglich forschungspraktische Artefakte bilden, so dass Netzwerke selbst als Grenzen aufzufassen sind. Diese Debatte schärft das Selbstverständnis der Netzwerkforschung erheblich und unterstreicht gleichzeitig die Eigenständigkeit netzwerkforscherischer Ansätze für das Verständnis aktueller gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen (z.B. „next society“). Der Sammelband enthält sowohl theoretische als auch empirische Zugänge zu dem Thema.
Relationale Soziologie
Der Band stellt die relationale Soziologie als einen innovativen Theorie- und Forschungsansatz für aktuelle soziologische Diskussionen vor. Allgemein geht es der relationalen Soziologie um die theoretische Modellierung und empirische Analyse von sozialen Netzwerken als sozio-kulturelle Formationen – Netzwerkstruktur wird als verwoben mit kulturellen Mustern gedacht. Die internationalen Beiträge des Bandes zeigen theoretische und empirische Richtungen auf, mit denen der reine Strukturalismus der Netzwerkforschung überwunden werden kann.
