A Royal Road to Algebraic Geometry

This book is about modern algebraic geometry. The title A Royal Road to Algebraic Geometry is inspired by the famous anecdote about the king asking Euclid if there really existed no simpler way for learning geometry, than to read all of his work Elements. Euclid is said to have answered: “There is no royal road to geometry!” The book starts by explaining this enigmatic answer, the aim of the book being to argue that indeed, in some sense there is a royal road to algebraic geometry. From a point of departure in algebraic curves, the exposition moves on to the present shape of the field, culminating with Alexander Grothendieck’s theory of schemes. Contemporary homological tools are explained. The reader will follow a directed path leading up to the main elements of modern algebraic geometry. When the road is completed, the reader is empowered to start navigating in this immense field, and to open up the door to a wonderful field of research. The greatest scientific experience of a lifetime!

Geometry

This is a revised edition of the ?rst printing which appeared in 2002. The book is based on lectures at the University of Bergen, Norway.Over the years these lectures have covered many different aspects and facets of the wonderful ?eld of geometry. Consequently it has never been possible to give a full and ?nal account of geometry as such, at an undergraduatelevel: A carefully consideredselection has always been necessary. The present book constitutes the main central themes of these selections. One of the groups I am aiming at, is future teachers of mathematics. All too oftenthe textsdealingwith geometrywhichgo intothe syllabusforteacher-students present the material in ways which appear pedantic and formalistic, suppressing the very powerful and dynamic character of this old ?eld, which at the same time so young. Geometry is a ?eld of mathematical insight, research, history and source of artistic inspiration. And not least important, an integral part of our common cultural heritage.

Singularities, Part 1

On April 7-10, 1980, the American Mathematical Society sponsored a Symposium on the Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincari, held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. This title presents the written versions this Symposium. It contains two papers by invited speakers who were not able to attend, S S Chern and L Nirenberg.

The Foundations of Geometry

For sophomore/junior-level courses in Geometry; especially appropriate for students that will go on to teach high-school mathematics. This text comfortably serves as a bridge between lower-level mathematics courses (calculus and linear algebra) and upper-level courses (real analysis and abstract algebra). It fully implements the latest national standards and recommendations regarding geometry for the preparation of high school mathematics teachers. Foundations of Geometry particularly teaches good proof-writing skills, emphasizes the historical development of geometry, and addresses certain issues concerning the place of geometry in human culture.

Algebraic Geometry

Algebraic Geometry has been at the center of much of mathematics for hundreds of years. It is not an easy field to break into, despite its humble beginnings in the study of circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas. This text consists of a series of ex

God The Dimensional Revelation

What questions do you have about Your Life, Your Being, Your Soul, and Your Conscious Awareness? GOD--The Dimensional Revelation is a book revealing reality. Broadly stated, reality is defined as "all that exists." The study of reality is called "metaphysics." Metaphysics is the primary field of philosophy. Metaphysics is divided into two major fields of study. These are cosmology and ontology. GOD--The Dimensional Revelation reveals cosmological facts about our big bang. Our research reconciles relativity theory and quantum mechanics. Ontologically, This Teaching Reveals a clear theology about GOD and Your Relationship with GOD. Learn how to use the scientific method to prove that the Reali...
