The author argues that there is not one city or military establishment in Australia that could be properly defended against air attack - without American help. He also surveys matters such as the unprecedented resignation rate from all three services, the expensive frigate program, the myth that there will be ten years' warning of any attack on Australia and the inadequacies of our top military leadership. He exposes the debilitating rivalries that exist, both between civilians and the military and among the three armed services.
In May 1992, terms of reference for a major study of Defence Policy for industry were agreed by Senator the Hon Robert Ray, Minister for Defence. The study has been co-ordinated under the direction of the Hon Roger Price MP, Parliamentry Secretary to the Minister for Defence. This report concludes that a technologically innovative, internationally competitive and outward looking Australian defence industry is an essential arm to the independent defence of Australian and its interests.
