Progress in Structural Mechanics

The book is devoted to the retirement of Prof. Wilfried Becker—a liber amicorum for a well-known specialist in the field of structural mechanics. Many excellent scientists from institutions around the world wrote their scientific chapters, stressing the Becker’s influence to structural mechanics. Thus, this collection discusses a lot of important problems and applications of mechanics.

Providing an interface between dry-bench bioinformaticians and wet-lab biologists, DNA Methylation Microarrays: Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis presents the statistical methods and tools to analyze high-throughput epigenomic data, in particular, DNA methylation microarray data. Since these microarrays share the same under

The Collapse of the American Management Mystique

Every nation likes to believe myths about itself. Americans' belief in the superiority of their managerial know-how seemed to be among those most solidly based in reality. Yet, Locke argues, despite its universal claims, American managerialism has never been more than a cultural peculiarity, one whose claims to superiority had not been proved but assumed, on the premise that the best economy must have the best management. That premise, moreover, has not served American managerialism particularly well, for in the 1970s a gap opened up between the mystique of American management and the realty of a mediocre American managerial performance. The 'mystique' collapsed and those looking for best pr...

A collection of papers assessing what has been accomplished and the obstacles that remain in the transition from communism to capitalism in East-Central Europe. The papers are arranged within four sections: the transition to market economies and political pluralism; Western assistance and integration; regional relations; and country studies. Each section begins with an overview. This assessment was initiated by a formal request from the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress to the Congressional Research Service. Some of the papers were discussed in May 1994 at a conference in Washington, DC. A compilation of statistical material prepared for the conference is included as an appendix. The Alzheimer Conundrum

The Alzheimer Conundrum

Why our approaches to Alzheimer's and dementia are problematic and contradictory Due to rapidly aging populations, the number of people worldwide experiencing dementia is increasing, and the projections are grim. Despite billions of dollars invested in medical research, no effective treatment has been discovered for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. The Alzheimer Conundrum exposes the predicaments embedded in current efforts to slow down or halt Alzheimer’s disease through early detection of pre-symptomatic biological changes in healthy individuals. Based on a meticulous account of the history of Alzheimer’s disease and extensive in-depth interviews, Margaret Lock highlights the limitations and the dissent associated with biomarker detection. Lock argues that basic research must continue, but should be complemented by a public health approach to prevention that is economically feasible, more humane, and much more effective globally than one exclusively focused on an increasingly harried search for a cure.

MicroNano Integration

In recent years, micro- and nanotechnologies became key technologies, having a significant effect on the development of new products and production technologies, as well as on novel medical diagnosis and treatment methods. Moreover, due to their enormous potential for new applications, micro- and nanotechnologies, in future, will increasingly affect our every days life, with an impact, comparable to that of the industrial revolution in the 19th century, or the developments in microelectronics in the 20th century. Although, micro- and nanotechnologies, in general, are regarded as two independent disciplines, there is obviously an intense interaction between these two fascinating technologies....

Handbook of Epigenetics

Handbook of Epigenetics

Epigenetics is considered by many to be the "new genetics" because of the overwhelming evidence of the contribution of non-genetic factors such as nutrition, environment, and chemical exposure on gene expression. The effects of epigenetics are vast, including tissue/organ regeneration, X-chromosome inactivation, and stem cell differentiation and genomic imprinting and aging. Aberrations of epigenetics influence many diseases for which clinical intervention is already in place, and many novel epigenetic therapies for cancer, immune disorders, neurological and metabolic disorders, and imprinting diseases are on the horizon. This comprehensive collection of reviews written by leaders in the fie...

Epigenetics refers to DNA and chromatin modifications that play an important role in the regulation of various genomic functions. This important book reviews human and cellular data that underline paradoxical findings with respect to the contribution of heredity and environment to phenotype. The contributors then reinterpret these experiments that incorporate epigenetic factors. Topics include DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin modifications, the role of epigenetic modifications and environment on gene expression, and integrating genomic medicine into clinical practice.
