The Brontës and Religion
This is the first full-length study of religion in the fiction of the Brontës. Drawing on extensive knowledge of the Anglican church in the nineteenth century, Marianne Thormählen shows how the Brontës' familiarity with the contemporary debates on doctrinal, ethical and ecclesiastical issues informs their novels. Divided into four parts, the book examines denominations, doctrines, ethics and clerics in the work of the Brontës. The analyses of the novels clarify the constant interplay of human and Divine love in the development of the novels. While demonstrating that the Brontës' fiction usually reflects the basic tenets of Evangelical Anglicanism, the book emphasises the characteristic spiritual freedom and audacity of the Brontës. Lucid and vigorously written, it will open up new perspectives for Brontë specialists and enthusiasts alike on a fundamental aspect of the novels greatly neglected in recent decades.

Jochen, the titles story's hero, is a man content in the face of others' discontent and their foolish fear of mortality. Like Jochen, many of Thormahlen's characters live in deceptively simple, but impossibly profound movements, accepting the happy limits of life. Judith Freeman asks in her introduction, "though we are drained, hunted to death, and out of breath, is [Jochen] not still, are we not all, happy men?" Thormahlen's great achievement is that his stories move as much toward the answer as the question, but in the end leave both untouched and unrelenting. Voice of Ice
Prose poetry presented in a bi-lingual edition. Written in French and translated by the author into the English, these poems were generated in a process yielding concurrent shifts to the original. Voice of Ice might be described as the chronicle of what a dream dreams, an account of a nightmare's torment. Ifland's collection of prose poems documents the quest for a coherent self, an authentic identity born out of the chaos of language and history. Her poems trace a radical process of de-creation--dismemberment of the body, dissolution of the ego, abandonment of the self--and the reinvention of a new identity, purified by the acid of tears.

On leaving school a sixteen-year-old boy goes to live with his uncle on a remote Welsh hill-farm. His aunt has recently committed suicide after losing her livestock in the foot-and-mouth epidemic and his uncle has turned, once again, to the bottle. The boy is a spiritual savant: an unwitting repository of folk memory from the margins, barely educated but possessed of extraordinary insights; barely literate but able to speak a language of his own - a poetry laden with Pagan and Christian myth. He is unaware that he is gifted and unaware of what he knows. But during one of his ecstatic trances, the boy learns that he has an appointed role in the world, which he must discover for himself. During an episode of brutal and climactic violence, he does exactly that. Told through the boy's internal monologue of beauty and damage, Runt is a powerful, disturbing and moving novel that reinvigorates the language of fiction and illuminates domestic tragedy with a penetrating epic light.

Following a very successful ECCV 2002, the response to our call for papers was almost equally strong – 555 papers were submitted. We accepted 41 papers for oral and 149 papers for poster presentation. Several innovations were introduced into the review process. First, the n- ber of program committee members was increased to reduce their review load. We managed to assign to program committee members no more than 12 papers.
