Since 1952, postgraduate courses for practising physicians and speci alists have been given by the Medical Faculty of the University of Leiden in the Boerhaave Quarter, in which most of its clinics and laboratories are located. During these years, recent advances in a wide variety of m~dical fields and subjects have been discussed by distin guished speakers from many countries. The steadily increasing atten dance has shown that, as could be expected from the rapid progress of modern medicine, there is a widely felt need for this form of postgra duate study. In 1957, therefore, the Leiden Medical Faculty appointed a permanent committee for the organization of postgraduate medical education. O...
Carbohydrate Chemistry provides review coverage of all publications relevant to the chemistry of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides in a given year. The amount of research in this field appearing in the organic chemical literature is increasing because of the enhanced importance of the subject, especially in areas of medicinal chemistry and biology. In no part of the field is this more apparent than in the synthesis of oligosaccharides required by scientists working in glycobiology. Clycomedicinal chemistry and its reliance on carbohydrate synthesis is now very well established, for example, by the preparation of specific carbohydrate- based antigens, especially cancer-specific oligosaccha...
Proceedings of an international conference held in Magdeburg, Germany, November 3-5, 1996
Since its inception the research area of platelet pharmacology has always been a vigorous one and it is a characteristic that new approaches to the understanding of platelet function are rapidly and thoroughly investigated. The intensity of this activity is attri butable, probably, to an appreciation by research workers in the field that a satisfactory therapeutic control of platelet function has yet to be realized. Also that if and when this problem of con trolling platelet function is achieved the benefits to clinical medicine will be immense since platelets are known to be involved in a multiplicity of events coupled within the haemostatic mechanisms and inflammatory responses. Aberration...
The International Scientific Symposium on Fibrinogen, Thrombosis, Coagulation, and Fibrinolysis was held in Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China, on August 30 - September 1, 1989. This Symposium has provided a forum for the free exchange of information in this important and rapidly advancing research field. This proceedings volume provides a published record of 46 papers presented at the Symposium. The sponsors have exerted no influence on the scientific opinions or positions of the participants in the Symposium. It is hoped that this Symposium will stimulate further worldwide cooperation and collaboration in these vital fields for the benefit of all human kind. This volume is ...
Isozymes, II: Physiological Function contains manuscripts presented at the Third International Conference on isozymes convened in April 1974 at Yale University. Separating 53 manuscripts into chapters, this book first discusses the medical uses of isozymes. It then describes the various dehydrogenase isozymes mechanisms of action and biological functions. Other general topics explored are the roles of isozymes in adaptation to varying temperatures and their use in the study of mitochondria. Significant topics on specific isozymes are given separately in other chapters.
