Energy and Geopolitics in the South China Sea
China has long claimed the ownership of a network of widely-scattered islands and their surrounding waters and resources in the South China Sea. These claims overlap in a substantial way with those of at least three ASEAN countries: Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia. To this day, the South China Sea has remained one of the region's most dangerous 'flashpoints'. Despite regional efforts to calm the situation, the complicated nature of the issue continues to challenge regional security. The ASEAN Studies Centre has taken this initiative to host a discussion on "Energy and Geopolitics in South China Sea", with contributions from Michael Richardson and a number of experts in this area to put across their analytical views of the issue.
Geopolitical Orientations, Regionalism and Security in the Indian Ocean
First published in 2004, this book is the inaugural volume of the Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) and is based on a selection of papers presented at the IORG launch in Chandigarh in November 2002. The volume emphasizes the complexity and historical and contemporary geopolitical significance of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It also propagates the necessity for increased intra-regional cooperation, especially in terms of economic and environmental security, maritime boundaries, sea lane security and ocean management, in the spirit of open regionalism, in order to ensure a more secure IOR. In addition, the volume initiates an agenda for future social science policy-orientated research. The book should be of particular interest to policy-makers, business people and academics, as well as citizens of the IOR.

The delimitation of boundaries between states can be difficult when the issue of sovereignty and the entitlement to claim sea areas are concerned. The understanding and interpretation of the rule of law will always differ for the different nations involved as they seek to secure the maximum benefits for themselves by means they deem appropriate to their needs. Arguments put forward by each party and how these boundaries are drawn are always points for contention; however with rule-based procedures, the process is made more transparent and somewhat helps mitigate tensions. We hope the article on this will throw some light on the various issues involved.

Antarctic Security in the Twenty-first Century
The Antarctic Treaty (1959) was adopted for the purpose of bringing peace and stability to the region and to facilitate cooperation in scientific research conducted on and around the continent. It has now been over fifty years since the Antarctic Treaty's entry into force, nevertheless, security continues to both drive and shape the legal and policy regime which applies to Antarctica. This book explores a wide range of Antarctic and Southern Ocean issues through the lens of security. The contributions to this volume engage with a security discourse which has expanded beyond the traditional military domain to include notions of economic security, environmental security, food security, bio-security, heath security and human security.
