This new volume of The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Professional Book Series is a critical and timely resource that paves the way and guides the future of mathematics teacher education. The collection of work in this AMTE Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education reflects on research and what we know about how best to prepare and support both mathematics teachers and mathematics teacher educators and presents what is happening in the field. Examples included in the 22 chapters highlight how we are preparing teachers across multiple contexts (e.g., within district, in content courses for the major) and grade ranges (K-20+) and all chapters highlight relevant connections...

In an era of accountability and increased demand of literacy competency, this book provides examples of how teacher educators and teachers have come together to learn from each other and from English learners. The chapters in this book follow a teacher learning framework that highlights joint work, features inquiry into practice and integrates disciplinary content knowledge with culturally and linguistically responsive teaching. While the chapters feature different venues for teacher learning, they all depict the process of teachers and teacher educators striving to integrate English learner instruction into mainstream teacher education. This book will be a resource for faculty in teacher education programs and for administrative personnel in school districts to illustrate the process of building authentic collaborations that can improve teacher learning and understanding about English learner instruction.

The primary thrust of the proposed volume is to provide information for higher education minority serving institutions (MSIs) and other institutions and individuals interested in providing and/or improving mentoring programs and services to a variety of target groups. The editors are interested in how mentorship can produce beneficial outcomes for the mentor that may be similar to or different from outcomes in other educational contexts. Thus, the purpose of this volume is to showcase, through case studies and other forms of empirical research, how successful mentoring programs and relationships at MSIs have been designed and implemented. Additionally, we will examine the various definitions and slight variations of the meaning of the construct of mentoring within the MSI context. It is our intent to share aspects of mentoring programs and relationships as well as their outcomes that have heretofore been underrepresented and underreported in the research literature.

Choices and Challenges

As charter schools enter their third decade, research in this key sector remains overwhelmingly contradictory and confused. Many studies are narrowly focused; some do not meet the standards for high-quality academic research. In this definitive work, Wohlstetter and her colleagues isolate and distill the high-quality research on charter schools to identify the contextual and operational factors that influence these schools’ performances. The authors examine the track record of the charter sector in light of the wide range of goals set for these schools in state authorizing legislation—at the classroom level, the level of the school community, and system-wide. In particular, they show how the evolution of the charter movement has shaped research questions and findings. By highlighting what we know about the conditions for success in charter schools, the authors make a significant contribution to current debates in policy and practice, both within the charter sector and in the larger landscape of public education.
