Iran and the World

Both Iran and the World had witnessed changes which have had profound effects in their past, as well as current events. Despite its long history, rich oil and gas resources, and the strategic position in the Persian Gulf, Iran has enjoyed stability in its blend of religion and politics of social affairs in the face of profound change. Contemporary international relations, known for its dominating principles of equal sovereignty and self-determination, are also undergoing change, the most obvious ones being the Soviet collapse, the “new world order,” and globalization, all of which have affected Iran. This book aims to emphasize recent developments in Iran and the world, study their inter...

Islam and Democracy

The electoral success of Islamist parties in the Middle East and North Africa in the wake of the Arab Spring has been welcomed by their Islamist proponents that were under pressure from their former ruling regimes. However, their success has been met with concerns and fears by secularists and religious minorities in these countries. The question of whether this Arab Islamic awakening represents a step forward or backward for human rights and democracy came to the agenda because of the possibility of the marginalization of those rights by fundamentalists religious political parties or groups. This book explores changes in the Middle East and North Africa in the aftermath of the Arab Spring by giving a brief history of developments. It discusses the types of challenges that these countries have faced, and continue to face, during their democratic transitions. It offers readers a more complete overview of the complex and interrelated aspects of the Arab Spring and the roles of Islam and democracy in these ongoing developments.

Nuclear Iran: The Birth of an Atomic State

The Iranian nuclear crisis has dominated world politics since the beginning of the century, with the country now facing increasing diplomatic isolation, talk of military strikes against its nuclear facilities and a disastrous Middle East war. What is Iran's nuclear programme all about? What is its genesis? There is little real understanding of Iran's nuclear programme, in particular its history, which is now over fifty years old. This ground-breaking book is unprecedented in its scope. It argues that the history of Iran's nuclear programme and the modern history of the country itself are irretrievably linked, and only by understanding one can we understand the other. From the programme's beg...
