Marlborough

Marlborough tells the history of a town that is centrally located at the crossroads of Routes 495, 290, and 20. A busy commercial and political center, Marlborough today is a thriving community that still retains the tree-covered ridges and idyllic ponds from its early days as a Native American and Colonial settlement. With stunning images, the book illustrates the stories of firefighters capturing one of the abolitionists' symbols of freedom to obtain their own firehouse bell, the success of the shoe industry that brought three railroad stations and a trolley service to town, and the famous residents known for medical and industrial breakthroughs.

Microbial Biotechnology: Principles And Applications

Life science research and industry is developing rapidly all over the world. Microbial biotechnology is increasingly being regarded as a core subject in most university and polytechnic life science courses. There already exist a number of excellent general textbooks on microbiology and biotechnology that deal with the basic principles of the field. To complement them, this book focuses on the various applications of microbial-biotechnological principles. A teaching-based format is adopted, whereby working problems, as well as answers to frequently asked questions, supplement the main text. The book also includes real life examples of how the application of microbial-biotechnological principles has achieved breakthroughs in both research and industrial production.Although Microbial Biotechnology has been written for polytechnic students and undergraduates, it contains sufficient information to be used as a reference for postgraduate students and lecturers. It may also serve as a resource book for corporate planners, managers and applied research personnel.

Antimicrobial use and farm size in China’s Shandong province

In this paper, we examine antibiotic use in the Chinese hog farming sector. China warrants special atten-tion for several reasons. First, China is both the largest producer and the largest consumer of antibiotics in the world (Zhu et al. 2013). Second, it leads the world in use of antimicrobial drugs in livestock (Van Boeckel et al. 2015). Third, several studies have shown higher levels of antibiotic resistance in China than in other countries (Zhang et al. 2006; Hu et al. 2014; Hvistendahl 2012). Finally, the combination of high rates of antibiotic use and weak regulatory enforcement make China an ideal setting in which to examine the drivers of antimicrobial use in livestock production.

Arresting Contagion

Over sixty percent of all infectious human diseases, including tuberculosis, influenza, cholera, and hundreds more, are shared with other vertebrate animals. Arresting Contagion tells the story of how early efforts to combat livestock infections turned the United States from a disease-prone nation into a world leader in controlling communicable diseases. Alan Olmstead and Paul Rhode show that many innovations devised in the fight against animal diseases, ranging from border control and food inspection to drug regulations and the creation of federal research labs, provided the foundation for modern food safety programs and remain at the heart of U.S. public health policy. America’s first co...

Resistant Infections

Authors present differing opinions on whether resistant infections are a serious problem, whether drug-resistant infections are the result of the agricultural use of antibiotics, whether drug companies are at fault for not developing better antibacterial drugs, and how can the problems be remedied.
