Amputation in Literature and Film

Amputation in Literature and Film: Artificial Limbs, Prosthetic Relations, and the Semiotics of “Loss” explores the many ways in which literature and film have engaged with the subject of amputation. The scholars featured in this volume draw upon a wide variety of texts, both lesser-known and canonical, across historical periods and language traditions to interrogate the intersections of disability studies with social, political, cultural, and philosophical concerns. Whether focusing on ancient texts by Zhuangzi or Ovid, renaissance drama, folktales collected by the Brothers Grimm, novels or silent film, the chapters in this volume highlight the dialectics of “loss” and “gain” in narratives of amputation to encourage critical dialogue and forge an integrated, embodied understanding of experiences of impairment in which mind and body, metaphor and materiality, theory and politics are considered as interrelated and interacting aspects of disability and ability.

Fings Ain't Wot They Used T' Be: The Lionel Bart Story

Lionel Bart was a writer and composer of British pop music and musicals, best known for creating the book, music and lyrics for Oliver! He also wrote the famous songs Living Doll (Cliff Richard) and From Russia With Love (Matt Munroe). He was unable to read music. He was a millionaire aged thirty in the Sixties, bankrupt in the Seventies and died in 1999. The authors gained exclusive access to Bart’s personal archives – his unfinished autobiography, his letters and scrapbooks. They detail how he signed away the rights to Oliver! to finance his new musical Twang – based on Robin Hood - which flopped badly in the theatre. Reveal how his heavy drinking led to diabetes and how he died in 1999 aged 69 from liver cancer. They have interviewed his personal secretaries, friends, family, counsellors and many of the performers, musicians and producers who worked with him. Interviewees include Rocky Horror’s Richard O’Brien and actors Dudley Sutton and Nigel Planer.

“I enjoyed Outrageous Fortune immensely. Its wonderful mix of the personal and the legal makes it hugely gripping and very moving. It’s a terrific read.” David Hare “A harrowing tale of one man’s long - and ultimately losing - struggle against the legal system and its representatives. One would like to think that what Terence Frisby went through couldn’t happen today - but can we be sure?” Marcel Berlins, Legal Columnist, The Guardian, Law in Action, Radio 4 “Mr Frisby’s shocking account corroborates my belief that our divorce system merely serves to damage families, multiply areas of conflict and line the pockets of the legal profession. An enthralling read.” Michael Man...
