Randomness and Recurrence in Dynamical Systems aims to bridge a gap between undergraduate teaching and the research level in mathematical analysis. This volume consists of contributions by speakers at a Conference on Algebra and its Applications that took place in Athens, Ohio, in March of 2005. It provides a snapshot of the diversity of themes and applications that interest algebraists today. The papers in this volume include some of the latest results in the theory of modules, noncommutative rings, representation theory, matrix theory, linear algebra over noncommutative rings, cryptography, error-correcting codes over finite rings, and projective-geometry codes, as well as expository articles that will provide algebraists and other mathematicians, including graduate students, with an accessible introduction to areas outside their own expertise. The book will serve both the specialist looking for the latest result and the novice seeking an accessible reference for some of the ideas and results presented here.
This volume contains the proceedings of a conference in honor of Goro Azumaya's seventieth birthday, held at Indiana University of Bloomington in May 1990. Professor Azumaya, who has been on the faculty of Indiana University since 1968, has made many important contributions to modern abstract algebra. His introduction and investigation of what have come to be known as Azumaya algebras subsequently stimulated much research on such rings and algebras, as well as applications to geometry and number theory. In addition to honoring Professor Azumaya's contributions, the conference was intended to stimulate interaction among three areas of his research interests; Azumaya algebras, group and Hopf algebra actions, and module theory. Aimed at researchers in algebra, this volume contains contributions by some of the leaders in these areas.

The "extensions" of rings and modules have yet to be explored in detail in a research monograph. This book presents state of the art research and also stimulating new and further research. Broken into three parts, Part I begins with basic notions, terminology, definitions and a description of the classes of rings and modules. Part II considers the transference of conditions between a base ring or module and its extensions. And Part III utilizes the concept of a minimal essental extension with respect to a specific class (a hull). Mathematical interdisciplinary applications appear throughout. Major applications of the ring and module theory to Functional Analysis, especially C*-algebras, appear in Part III, make this book of interest to Algebra and Functional Analysis researchers. Notes and exercises at the end of every chapter, and open problems at the end of all three parts, lend this as an ideal textbook for graduate or advanced undergradate students.
