The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Starting from these premises, the present work examines - within a chronological span that goes from the conclusion of the Second World War to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate - the contribution offered by the Holy See and by Catholics from different national contexts in deciphering the role of the Mediterranean Sea within the wider global context. As such, it constitutes a reflection on this geographical space with its peculiar cultural, economic, political, and religious realities by highlighting the role played by the Mediterranean in the elaboration of visions and projects of civilization. This work is the fruit of a wider research programme called Occidentes - Horizons and projects of civilization in the Church of Pius XII. Il discernimento come problema formativo
La nostra società, in questa fase, ci mette di fronte ad una acuta razionalità teorica e operativa che lascia intravedere la possibilità di un mondo più umano; d’altra parte però si rileva anche la presenza di una diffusa irrazionalità nelle scelte e nei comportamenti personali e comunitari. Il rischio che tale irrazionalità aumenti comunque la sua diffusione nelle varie azioni è avvertito con nuova preoccupazione. Di conseguenza, occorre puntare sullo sviluppo di una corretta razionalità; per questo il libro pone il problema del discernimento, cioè del conoscere e praticare l’esercizio che consente l’applicazione di una corretta ragione alla realtà aumentando la sua capacità di giudicare gli eventi. Occorre quindi “imparare a discernere”. Questo è anche l’accorato appello di Papa Francesco rivolto non solo al mondo cristiano, ma all’uomo. Il libro consente così al lettore di entrare in questa prima letteratura filosofica e teologica con un’ottica formativa.

Prefazione di Francesco Bonini Tra il 1939 e il 1945 l’editrice Studium e l’omonima rivista realizzarono un coerente e impegnativo progetto culturale che coniugò missione intellettuale e spirito imprenditoriale. In un periodo segnato dalla crisi del regime fascista, dalla seconda guerra mondiale e dalla prospettiva della ricostruzione, esse costituirono un crogiolo di idee di grande significato per la storia della cultura cattolica. Nel volume sono descritte le vicende di questo cenacolo di scrittori e di studiosi. Grazie a numerose fonti inedite viene documentato e analizzato il contributo offerto da Studium alla formazione di una coscienza civile del laicato, al dibattito sui temi del totalitarismo, della libertà e della democrazia, al rinnovamento e all’aggiornamento del pensiero cattolico in Italia.
