Social Costs and Sustainability
Important progress has been made in recent years in the valuation of social costs of energy and transport. This progress has encouraged the insight that systems of "Green Accounting" considering social costs and policy instruments for the internalization of social costs are necessary tools to realize the worldwide goal of sustainable development. This workshop report provides an excellent survey of the latest results of social costs in the energy and transport sector. Further, the theoretical framework of social costs is extended to a broader concept of sustainable development. Finally, concepts and first experiences of the internalization of social costs e.g. through least cost planning or an ecological tax reform are reviewed.
Germany's Africa Policy Revisited
Although Germany has been a major international player in Africa ever since West Germany's readmission to international politics after 1955, surprisingly little has been written about this topic, and even less reliable knowledge has been established. This study poses the need for a review of Germany's relations with the African continent over the past decades. It challenges scholars to fill the factual gaps that characterize the state of research so far. The Implications of Freedom
The term 'NGO' is so widely used nowadays that it has effectively lost its meaning. Therefore, in order to put back flesh on what has become a very bare skeleton, this book attempts to portray a 'real' organization that originated during the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. By meticulously studying this land sector NGO over a prolonged period of time, much is revealed about its internal dynamics and the changing relationships with actors in the state, civil society and the market. This embedded tale (re-)introduces a historical, political and socio-economic dimension in the analysis of NGOs and shows that they are not as value-driven, autonomous, accountable and non-profit as is often claimed.
