Junipero Serra

Junipero Serra: The Story by Barnabas Hughes, OFM150 page perfect bound editionThis biography recounts the life of Junípero Serra from the viewpoint of his health and the rationale for the evangelization of Upper California, themes not stressed so strongly in other accounts. I leave it to the reader to discover and bring specifics to each viewpoint. All the major events in Serra's life are here together with many minor happenings, both accomplishments and frustrations. Everything is placed within a frame of two conditions that accompanied Serra throughout his career in New Spain. The subtitle of this biography is an excerpt from a letter Serra wrote to a confrere, Father Fray Francisco Serra (no relation). Referring to his parents, Junípero wrote, "... surely they would encourage me to go forward and never to turn back"

Sourcebook in the Mathematics of Medieval Europe and North Africa

Medieval Europe was a meeting place for the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic civilizations, and the fertile intellectual exchange of these cultures can be seen in the mathematical developments of the time. This sourcebook presents original Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic sources of medieval mathematics, and shows their cross-cultural influences. Most of the Hebrew and Arabic sources appear here in translation for the first time. Readers will discover key mathematical revelations, foundational texts, and sophisticated writings by Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic-speaking mathematicians, including Abner of Burgos's elegant arguments proving results on the conchoid—a curve previously unknown in medieval Eur...

Ulster to America

In Ulster to America: The Scots-Irish Migration Experience, 1680–1830, editor Warren R. Hofstra has gathered contributions from pioneering scholars who are rewriting the history of the Scots-Irish. In addition to presenting fresh information based on thorough and detailed research, they offer cutting-edge interpretations that help explain the Scots-Irish experience in the United States. In place of implacable Scots-Irish individualism, the writers stress the urge to build communities among Ulster immigrants. In place of rootlessness and isolation, the authors point to the trans-Atlantic continuity of Scots-Irish settlement and the presence of Germans and Anglo-Americans in so-called Scots-...
