In its second edition, this book offers a practical introduction to the phonology of English, dealing with topics such as articulatory, acoustic and auditory phonetics, the phonological system of English, English vowels, diphthongs and consonants or speech and prosody. Similarly, the volume includes a glossary of specific terminology, and all chapters present activities to practice what has been learned about the topic, as well as a quiz to test the knowledge acquired. This collection combines research from the field of (im)politeness studies with research on language pedagogy and language learning. It aims to engender a useful dialogue between (im)politeness theorists, language teachers, and SLA researchers, and also to broaden the enquiry to naturalistic contexts other than L2 acquisition classrooms, by formulating 'teaching' and 'learning' as processes of socialization, cultural transmission, and adaptation.
The teaching of the phonetics and the phonology of British English to undergraduate students is often based on a bare, uncritical presentation of facts as they are usually portrayed in classic publications such as Gimson-Cruttenden, Collins & Mees, Roach, Car, etc. While they present a welcome canonical view of language, there is a danger that students will end up holding a quasi-dogmatic opinion of the phonology of English, with little awareness of other views and approaches. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, the contributors to this volume have tried to combine theory and praxis in tackling different aspects of the phonology of English. The result is this book of readings which will hopefully provide students with reliable and up-to-date information on key issues both at segmental and supra-segmental level.
The ideas that mark modern-day pragmatics are old, but did not start to get more systematically developed until the 1960s and 1970s. Still, the very recognition of pragmatics as a self-standing academic discipline is a product of the 1980s, not least made possible by the establishment of the International Pragmatics Association. One scholar in particular has devoted his life both to IPrA and to the discipline. This volume pays homage to Jef Verschueren on the occasion of his 60th birthday. It celebrates him for his long-standing dedication as Secretary General of IPrA and for his scholarly contributions to the field. We owe to Jef Verschueren the insight that the processes through which language users (do or do not) achieve understanding among each other in communication can only be fully comprehended if approached from a pragmatic perspective, i.e. if understanding is pragmaticized. The chapters in this book are written by scholars who, like Jef Verschueren, have played a key role in the genesis and development of the field, and who still actively contribute to its advancement today. Each author looks back, evaluates the present, and takes on new challenges.
This volume develops a new multimodal semiotic approach to the study of communication, examining how multimodal discourse is construed transmedially and interculturally and how new technologies and cultural stances inform communicative contexts across the world. It contributes to current theoretical debates in the disciplines of semiotics, linguistics, multimodality, and pragmatics, as well as those aspects of pedagogy and film studies that engage with the notions of text and narrative by addressing questions such as: How do we study multimedia communication?
