Globalization and Modernity in Asia
Much has been said regarding the global flows of information that are characteristic of modernity; it has been frequently stressed that these conduits are so deeply embedded that local or national environments may be imagined as having a global span. Thus, while we are now well aware that the imagination is integral to global cultural processes, questions still arise about how the imagination of life with a global span is made possible at the level of everyday social practices. This book examines performative interventions that can generate a re-imagining of local publics - both spatially grounded and mediatized - and help to renegotiate the connection between the local and the global. After the 'performative turn' of the 1960s, it has been understood that shared experience of performance as event or spectacle can transform interpretations of the global and the local and create new meanings, and this book continues in the direction of this important tradition, while also fully expanding on its consequences. Cosmopolitan Intimacies
The golden age of Malay film in the 1950s and 1960s was the product of a musical and cultural cosmopolitanism in the service of a nation-making process based on ideas of Malay ethnonationalism, initially fluid, increasingly homogenised over time. The commercial films of the period, and in particular their film music, from national cultural icons P. Ramlee and Zubir Said, remain important reference points for Malaysia and Singapore to this day. This is the first in-depth study of the film music of the period. It brings together ethnomusicological and cultural studies perspectives. This new inter-disciplinary book is the first comparative, case-based analysis of media panoply in (and out of) Asia today. Examining what the authors call the "media/tion equation", the contributors demonstrate the multiple links between media, society and culture, and advance the claim that media is the key means through which Asians experience, understand, effect and are affected by the worlds containing them.
