"New connoisseurs take the opportunities offered by the typically Dutch phenomenon of landscape being continuously adapted to changing demands, always with temporary leftovers awaiting their turn for utilitarian recycling. New ways of thinking about landscape design originate from this specialist landscape use. Bas Princen's arguments take the form of superb photography. The pictures produce awareness about the complex qualities that construct contemporary landscape, such as accessibility, wind direction, water currents and communication networks. In addition the use of certain products, such as kites, mountain bikes and GPS monitors has a bearing on the way in which landscape is understood. Bas Princen enters these landscapes with the slowness, sharpness and precision of a large-format view camera. Although he has a keen eye for user interpretations and has produces over 40 awesome and puzzling pictures, Artificial Arcadia is mainly a book about landscape and its design. Bas Princen (*1975 in Zeeland, the Netherlands) belongs to a generation of photographers who in their very own way make reference to so-called New Topographics. This is a group of what in the meantime consists of ten big-name landscape photographers, including Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Stephen Shore, and of course Bernd and Hilla Becher, who had their first big international success in 1975 with an exhibition of the same name at George Eastman House in Rochester. While they distanced themselves from subjectively-tinged photography in an attempt to render stark reality as faithfully as possible, Princen objectifies urban space in a comparable way, but with an ironic twist. Seen through Princen's lens, anonymous urban architecture assumes an almost magical and slightly surrealist air.

This edition presents the ?Room of Peace?, first shown as an installation at the 2014 Architecture Biennale in Venice. It is the first in a series of publications by Bas Princen, each dedicated to one photographic project or installation. Here he photographs the Sala della Pace in Siena?s Palazzo Pubblico. By turning off the spotlights used to highlight Ambrogio Lorenzetti?s famous fresco panorama and opening the curtains to daylight, he realised that it is not simply a singular work of art. Rather, it is part of a painted architectural order that fully covers the walls and ceiling. Designed by Joris Kritis, the book includes Princen?s introduction and an essay by Marc Angélil and Cary Siress.

The multi-talented architect Wiel Arets (*1955 in Heerrlen) is also known as a designer, author, and editor of many books and series of books, and is a professor at the arts universities in Berlin, Madrid, and Washington. During the past fifty years, documentary photography and architecture have become increasingly interdependent, blurring the disciplinary boundary between the two. Seamless looks at the work of a new generation of European photographers and architects working together to produce images of architecture made from fragments of reality. At the same time, it investigates how shared digital technologies influence the creation of architecture and its photographic representation through images. Based on a series of interviews, Seamless discusses the collaborations between Filip Dujardin and Jan De Vylder, Philipp Schaerer and Roger Boltshauser, and Bas Princen and OFFICE Kersten Geers David van Severen. Each of the three sections is illustrated with a series in images that form parallel narratives within the book.
