'Reason, Causation and Compatibility with the Phenomena' strives to give answers to the philosophical problem of the interplay between realism, explanation and experience. This book is a compilation of essays that recollect significant conceptions of rival terms such as determinism and freedom, reason and appearance, power and knowledge. This title discusses the progress made in epistemology and natural philosophy, especially the steps that led from the ancient theory of atomism to the modern quantum theory, and from mathematization to analytic philosophy. Moreover, it provides possible gateways from modern deadlocks of theory either through approaches to consciousness or through historical critique of intellectual authorities. This work will be of interest to those either researching or studying in colleges and universities, especially in the departments of philosophy, history of science, philosophy of science, philosophy of physics and quantum mechanics, history of ideas and culture. Greek and Latin Literature students and instructors may also find this book to be both a fascinating and valuable point of reference.

The Quest for a World History of Science is a concise History of Science from an World History standpoint. It begins with Ancient Greek Science, as the first self-conscious and well-documented scientific effort in global level. After presenting the main contributions of the Greeks in philosophy, mathematics, geometry, geography and astronomy, turns to the History of Science in China and its exchanges with India and Islam. The next chapter represents the age of the oceanic discoveries, which created the inexorable presuppositions for the genesis of the global trade and a world system. The fourth chapter refers to the history of metallurgy and electromagnetism. The fifth to the history of petroleum. The sixth to the history of computers and information technologies. The seventh focuses on important aspects of modern scientific conceptions of the universe and the last one, the eighth chapter, examines the relation between philosophy and history of science.

'Landmarks in the History of Science' is a concise history of science from a global and macro-historical standpoint. It is an account of grand theoretical revolutions, such as heliocentrism, atomism, and relativity. But, more importantly, it is also a story of the methodological transitions to the experimental, mathematical, constructivist and instrumental practices of science. It begins with Ancient Greek science, as one of the first self-conscious, comprehensive and well-documented scientific endeavors at the global level. The numerous contributions of the Greeks, in philosophy, mathematics, geometry, geography and astronomy, momentous as they were, were fruits of leisure rather than indus...

Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization: Baanes-Eznik of Kolb

The idea of publishing an extensive Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization (EPLBHC) was conceived in Greece, where - with Alexios Savvides as founding editor - the first volume of the Greek EPLBHC was prepared and eventually appeared in 1996. Six volumes have been published so far, the last two (V-VI) in early summer 2006, covering letters alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon, but obviously not including C, which in Greek is divided to a large extent under K (kappa) and to a lesser extent under ? (khi). On the other hand, the gamma entries will appear under G in the English edition. Volumes I to IV of the Greek edition (1996-2002), accompanied by a separate bibliographical volume on secondary works reaching the year 1998 (2000), have been extensively cited both in lengthy reviews and footnote references. Thus, it was recently decided to continue the project on a much larger scale and to launch it in English, in this way opening it to a much wider reading public. The Greek project will continue, as well, with each project complementing the other.

John Scottus Eriugena

John Scottus Eriugena, the ninth-century Irish philosopher and theologian, is known as the interpreter of Greek thought to the Latin West. He was perhaps the most important philosophical thinker to appear in Latin Christendom between Augustine in the fifth century and Anselm in the eleventh. In this volume, Deirdre Carabine provides a clear and accessible introduction--the only one available in the English language--to the thought of this important figure. In part I, Carabine describes the intellectual revival of the ninth century and situates Eriugena's role within that movement. She looks closely at Eriugena's life and intellectual achievements, including his contribution to the theologica...
