It's the end of April, 1975. Saigon is about to fall, as the situation goes from severely bad to completely fucked-up. The Snake is faced with a difficult decision: he can fade into the noise of history, slowly obscured by the haze and comfort of innocent love. Or he can follow his instincts into the violent depths of human nature, along a transnational path of conflict paved by drugs and weapons smugglers, from the ricefields of Vietnam to the jungles of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Hardly a choice. Power & Snake explores the implausible and yet highly probable story of how The Snake has found himself in this situation - and what he does about it. Using the historical events we are aware of as stepping stones in the dangerous swamps of twentieth century conflicts, The Snake brings the reader into the heart of darkness and shows us how to both respect and laugh at the creatures that call it their home.

The Red and the Black - Stendhal - Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black) is a historical psychological novel in two volumes by Stendhal, published in 1830. It chronicles the attempts of a provincial young man to rise socially beyond his modest upbringing through a combination of talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy. He ultimately allows his passions to betray him. The novel's full title, Le Rouge et le Noir: Chronique du XIXe siècle (The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the 19th Century), indicates its twofold literary purpose as both a psychological portrait of the romantic protagonist, Julien Sorel, and an analytic, sociological satire of the French social order under the Bo...

The first comprehensive survey of the world's oldest known legal systems, this collaborative work of twenty-two scholars covers over 3,000 years of legal history of the Ancient Near East. Each of the book's chapters represents a review of the law of a particular period and region, e.g. the Egyptian Old Kingdom, by a specialist in that area. Within each chapter, the material is organized under standardized legal categories (e.g. constitutional law, family law) that make for easy cross-referencing. The chapters are arranged chronologically by millennium and within each millennium by the three major politico-cultural spheres of the region: Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Anatolia and the Levant. An introduction by the editor discusses the general character of Ancient Near Eastern Law.

The so-called Sumerian conjugation prefixes are the most poorly understood and perplexing elements of Sumerian verbal morphology. Approaching the problem from a functional-typological perspective and basing the analysis upon semantics, Professor Woods argues that these elements, in their primary function, constitute a system of grammatical voice, in which the active voice is set against the middle voice. The latter is represented by heavy and light markers that differ with respect to focus and emphasis. As a system of grammatical voice, the conjugation prefixes provided Sumerian speakers with a linguistic means of altering the perspective from which events may be viewed, giving speakers a series of options for better approximating in language the infinitely graded spectrum of human conceptualization and experience.
