This book provides an extensive review of research into Campylobacter, Helicobacter and Arcobacter species found in poultry. It includes the epidemiology, diagnosis, immune response and disease control of these organisms in commercial poultry production. Antimicrobial resistance, and the incidence and human disease potential of these bacteria is also discussed. A global perspective is presented by experts from four continents – South America, North America, Europe and Africa. This reference work will be of value to the poultry industry, research laboratories, public health workers and students. An extensive overview of the relevant literature is provided by the reference lists at the end of each chapter.

Many hundreds of toxins have been purified and characterized from the complex mixtures of pharmacologically active proteins and polypeptides within snake venoms. The study of these toxins has contributed significantly to our understanding of snake venom toxicity and, perhaps more importantly, has provided numerous research tools which have helped decipher the intricate details of various physiological processes at the molecular level and which have also been used in the development of pharmaceutical agents. Among these toxins, phospholipase A2 enzymes (PLA2 enzymes) are the most fascinating group of proteins and Venom Phospholipase A2 Enzymes is the first comprehensive book covering both fun...

Chicken Egg Yolk Antibodies, Production and Application

Polyclonal antibodies, widely used in research and diagnostics, are conventionally isolated from the blood of immunised mammals. The fact that antibodies can also be detected in the yolk of eggs laid by immunised hens, led to the development of the yolk antibody technology as an alternative method less stressful to animals. Hens can be kept under nearly natural conditions and antibodies be isolated from the eggs. Further, the IgY-technology has the advantage that avian antibodies can be produced against several antigens which do not induce a immune response in mammals. Protocols on how to keep and immunise hens and on the extraction, isolation and use of antibodies from yolk are described in detail in this manual. For their work on yolk antibodies the authors received the FISEA (International Foundation for the Substitution of Animal Experimentation, Luxembourg) prize in 1997.

Biomedical Applications of Nanoparticles

Biomedical Applications of Nanoparticles describes the most interesting and investigated biomedical applications of nanoparticles, emphasizing their therapeutic impact. Progress made in the therapy of severe diseases, such as cancer and difficult infections is strictly correlated to the scientific progress and technological development in the field of materials science. Nanoparticles have numerous therapeutic applications, starting with the design of new drugs, delivery systems, therapeutic materials, and their contribution to the development of preventive strategies. The book highlights the impact of nanoparticles on the therapy of infections, antimicrobial effect and also anti-cancer strategies. Successful examples are given throughout the book, along with analysis in order to improve future outcomes of novel therapies. Highlights the term nanotherapeutics and presents several classifications of nanotherapeutics from different points-of-view Presents the recent progress related to nanotherapeutics in the oral cavity Provides the recent progress in the field of biomedical nanoparticles
