The Policing of Belfast 1870-1914

The Policing of Belfast, 1870-1914 examines the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in late Victorian Belfast in order to see how a semi-military, largely rural constabulary adapted to the problems that a city posed. Mark Radford explores whether the RIC, as the most public face of British government, was successful in controlling a recalcitrant Irish urban populace. This examination of the contrast in styles between urban and rural policing and semi-rural and civil constabulary offers an important insight into the social, political and military history of Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century. The book concludes by showing how governmental neglect of the force and its failure to comprehensively address the issues of pay and conditions of service ultimately led to crisis in the RIC.

The unionist/nationalist divide in Belfast today has its origins in the 1840s when Catholic and Protestant workers were involved in campaigns for and against the repeal of the union with Great Britain. This book, a case-study of the Pound and Sandy Row, 1820-86, challenges the existing literature which dates this division from the 1880-90s and overturns the argument that some other lasting political division, such as Liberal/Conservative, could have developed in Belfast in the 1860s to 1880s. The active role of Catholic workers in nationalist movements and the strength of working- class Protestant opposition to them are revealed for the first time through an examination of the campaign for r...

The Bulkies

In Ireland, the story of nineteenth-century policing has been dominated mainly by studies of the Royal Irish Constabulary and, to a lesser extent, of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. This book tells the story of the Ã?Â?Ã?«forgotten forceÃ?Â?Ã?Â- of Irish police history, the Belfast Borough Police or Ã?Â?Ã?«BulkiesÃ?Â?Ã?Â-.

This book examines the civil war - also known as the Troubles - in the cities of Belfast and Derry. Its original archival research traces how multiple and overlapping conflicts unfolded in the streets of these two cities. The Troubles grew out of a political process that mobilized opponents and defenders of the Stormont regime, and which also dragged London and Dublin into the crisis. Drawing upon government papers, police reports, army files, intelligence summaries, evidence to inquiries, and parish chronicles, this book sheds light on key events, such as: the October 5, 1968 march; the Battle of the Bogside; the Belfast riots of August 1969; the Battle of St. Matthew's; and the Falls Road curfew.

Patrick McAlister was bishop of Down and Connor for only nine years, but during that short episcopate he had to cope with the worst riots of the 19th century in Belfast, triggered by the Home Rule bill of 1886. Thirty-two people lost their lives, and much damage was done to property. Catholic-owned public houses were particularly vulnerable. Four years later McAlister confronted the supporters of Parnell, and founded his own newspapers in opposition to the Parnellism of the local nationalist journal. At pastoral level he continued his predecessor's policy of providing churches and schools for the increasing population of Belfast, and establishing societies to deal with the social problems and welfare needs of the less fortunate members of society. Political antagonisms in the city and the complete dominance of the corporation by the Conservative party added to the difficulties of pastoral care.
