This book investigates the contemporary relevance of the Belgic Confession. The book groups the 37 articles of the Belgic Confession together to cover the confession in 12 chapters (alongside an introductory chapter). The emphasis of the publication falls on two aspects: (1) providing a scope of contemporary theological, ethical and general issues and possible controversies regarding the content of the Belgic Confession, and (2) formulating ethical perspectives and guidelines from the Belgic Confession that may assist in the building of societies. Where applicable, chapters also discuss the history of the text of the Belgic Confession, the organic unity between the articles of the Belgic Confession, a dogma-historical perspective on the development of the doctrine/content of the Belgic Confession and the relationship between the Belgic Confession and other confessions.

Confessing the Faith Today

With the understanding that confession is a witness to the gospel, Confessing the Faith Today investigates how a sixteenth-century Reformation confession, the Belgic Confession, can assist contemporary Christians testify to the truth of Gods gracious turn toward creation and do so in the context of the twenty-first century's competing claims. A close examination of the internal coherence of the Belgic Confession, along with an exploration of how that confession might engage contemporary life, offers fresh insight into how Christians might articulate what is at stake in the gospel. Janssen encourages the church to enter a conversation with the forebears of the faith, acknowledging the historical nature of not only the confession but of God's involvement in all creation.

With the publication of volume two is completed a Reformed, full-scale, commentary on the Belgic Confession, of which there are only a few in English today. This book is not a summary of the Confession, nor a compilation of sermons loosely based on the Confession, but a commentary. It explains the Confession, article by article, doctrine by doctrine.Volume two begins with the Confession's opening article on the doctrine of salvation, continues with the Confession's lengthy treatment of the doctrine of the church, and concludes with the Confession's explanation of the doctrine of the last things-eschatology.Volume two covers Articles 22-37 of the Belgic Confession and includes indexes for both volumes.

Daniel Hyde offers a necessary, fresh exposition and application of its doctrine in the twenty-first century, with the hope of setting the Reformed churches on fire for their historic Christian, Protestant, and Reformed faith in the midst of a cold and lifeless world. The Belgic Confession is not a systematic theology but the historic and systematic confession of faith by the Reformed churches. --from publisher description.

A solid breakaway from the theology of the middle ages, but nonetheless dated. It should not be designated a standard of orthodoxy. It will become apparent that not everything in this Confession can stand the test of the original Hebrew-Christian mindset demonstrated in the holy scriptures. We will discover that many remnants of unacceptable medieval theology have insinuated themselves into classic Reformed theology, here in the Belgic Confession as well as in the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dort.

For the Cause of the Son of God

The Reformation is usually not associated with missionary fervor. Similarly, the confessions of faith produced by Reformed churches have seldom been viewed as missionary statements. This book argues for a reconsideration of these positions. The focus is on the Belgic Confession of faith written in 1561 by the Belgian martyr, Guy de Bres. Bredenhof argues that the Belgic Confession was an effort on the part of de Bres and the Reformed churches of the Low Countries to reach those they considered to be non-Christians. He demonstrates how the structure of the Confession represents a contextualized witness to sixteenth century Europe. FOR THE CAUSE OF THE SON OF GOD also looks at missionary uses of the Belgic Confession in the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, both from theoretical and practical perspectives. The church will surely be enriched by a more careful reflection on the relationship between confessions such as the Belgic and the call of Christ to bring the gospel to the ends of the earth.
