Examining Indonesia’s Strategic Role, Position, and Interest in Indo-Pacific

In recent years, Indopacific has become one of the most important regions in world politics, marked by the growing attention of the great powers toward this area. In that sense, it is essential to analyze how Indonesia, which is geographically located at the heart of the region, has and should navigate to cope with the dynamics of the region. Indonesia’s role, position, and interests are then some of the elements of its foreign policy toward the Indopacific that become the focus of this book.

Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Latin America is low -- about one fifth of that of the United States. In addition, in the last five decades, Latin America has been unsuccessful to catch-up in wealth to the United States level while other countries at similar or lower stages of development have been successful. The failure to achieve higher levels of relative income embodies so called the development problem of Latin America. According to the publication, the bulk of the difference in GDP per capita between Latin America and the United States is explained by low GDP per worker and, especially, low total factor productivity (TFP) in Latin America.

With today’s social and geopolitical order in significant flux this project offers vital insight into the future global order by comparatively charting national media perceptions regarding the future of global competition, through the lens of Ontological Security (OS). The authors employ a mixed-method approach to analyze 620 news articles from 47 Russian, Chinese, Venezuelan, and Iranian news sources over a five-year period (2014-2019), quantitatively comparing the drivers of their visions while providing in-depth qualitative case studies for each nation. Not only do these narratives reveal how these four nations understand the current global order, but also point to their (in)flexibility...

By critically addressing the tension between nationalism and human rights that is presumed in much of the existing literature, the essays in this volume confront the question of how we should construe human rights: as a normative challenge to the excesses of modernity, particularly those associated with the modern nation-state, or as an adjunct of globalization, with its attendant goal of constructing a universal civilization based on neoliberal economic principles and individual liberty.

Italy Revisited

Drawing out her mother's childhood memories of life in southern Italy at the dawn of the twentieth century, Mary Melfi takes an unconventional approach to autobiographical writing. Italy Revisited serves as a double memoir, told in dialogue between a mother and a daughter. The conversation takes the reader to a medieval town high up in the mountains where time is told by the shadow the sun casts, where wheat and olive oil are the currency of choice (barter is in use), and where marriage is as much about property as it is about love. As they re-create that vanished world, the pair finds greater understanding of the tumultuous relationships that sometimes exist between immigrant mothers and their children.

Between 1989 and 2004, the EU's conditionality for membership transformed Central and East Europe. The EU had enormous potential power over the whole range of domestic politics in the candidate countries. However, the EU was able to use that power at a few key points in the process leading to their accession. The EU's long-term influence worked primarily through soft power and through voluntary rather than coercive means. During the membership preparations, the EU built many different routes of influence into the candidate countries' domestic policy-making through 'Europeanization'. The Central and East Europeans voluntarily took on the Union's norms and methods, guided by the European Commission, in a massive transfer of policies and institutions. However, the EU missed important opportunities to effect change as well. The EU's Transformative Power explores in detail how the EU used its influence to control the movement of people across Europe, through both coercive use of conditionality and voluntary methods of Europeanization.
