"Bill Clark was Ronald Reagan's single most trusted aide, perhaps the most powerful national security advisor in American history. His close relationship with Reagan allows a special insight into the President as well as other close friends from the earliest Reagan years: Lyn Nofziger, Cap Weinberger and Bill Casey. Also featured are the exquisite Clare Boothe Luce; the elegant Nancy Reagan; the mercurial Alexander Haig; Britain's "Iron Lady", Margaret Thatcher; France's wily François Mitterrand, the saintly Pope John Paul II, and an anxious Saddam Hussein, among others. With Reagan, Clark accomplished many things, but none more profound than the track they laid to undermine Soviet communism, to win the Cold War. "--from cover.
The Star Hotel in Newcastle has become a site of defiance for the marginalized young and dispossessed working class. To understand the whole story of the Star Hotel riot, it should be seen in the context of other moments of resistance such as the 1890 Maritime Strike, Rothbury miners' lockout in 1929 and the recent battle for the Laman Street fig trees. As Australia’s first industrial city, Newcastle is also a natural home of radicalism but until now, the stories which reveal its breadth and impact have remained untold. Radical Newcastlebrings together short illustrated essays from leading scholars, local historians and present day radicals to document both the iconic events of the region’s radical past, and less well known actions seeking social justice for workers, women, Aboriginal people and the environment

'In these stories, poems and photographs with Adelaide as its theme, the city sighs with shifting sands. Its mornings swirl with readdressed mail and untended gardens, its afternoons seethe with melting bitumen and its nights crackle with heat, breakdown, the attrition of marriages. The city disgorges stories in the way waste yields coloured glass, not as a collector's item but as something being halted from passing out of memory.' - From the foreword by Brian Castro Contributors include: Nicholas Jose, Jude Aquilina, Rachel Hennessy, Anne Bartlett, Carol LeFevre, Jill Jones, Ken Bolton, Graham Rowlands and John Tranter, writing as Mark Pallas.
Poetry that's really poetry and not prose in short lines (my early attempts were like that) is a fairly recent development in the last five years. It has allowed me to re-visit and explore my own childhood and past with a degree of recall that has sometimes surprised me and a degree of honesty as well. And to take side-swipes at aspects of modern life among the way.So more of that will now be seeing the light of day soon in Greybell Wood and Beyond to be published by Lapwing Publications of Belfast. However, I must admit poetic licence creeps in as memories get manipulated and heightened for dramatic effect. So not quite the confessional it may at times seem. My first solo collection, so an important step forward.

Political parties exist at the centre of democratic politics, but where does power lie within them, and how is it exercised? The Political Party in Canada explores the inner workings of these complex organizations through an examination of the composition and roles of key party actors (members and activists, candidates, local associations, donors, central officials, and members of Parliament), as well as the interactions between them.
