Bernard of Clairvaux

For over forty years Bernard of Clairvaux composed works of theology and spiritual reflection. He became the counselor of kings, nobles, popes, and scholars. He advocated a strong, reformed papacy and was the spiritual leader of the early twelfth-century european Church. Often overlooked, these short works by Bernard may well give readers their truest insight into the saint's sermons as his monks heard them. The Parables explore the spiritual meaning of Scripture directly and dramatically. The Sentences likely represent his sermon style before he polished his work for publication. Michael Casey, an Australian Cistercian, has published extensively on the theology of Bernard and on monastic spirituality. His work includes Athirst for God: Desire in Bernard of Clairvaux's Sermons on the Song of Songs. Francis R. Swietek is a medievalist at the University of Dallas. He and John Sommerfeldt co-editedStudiosorum Speculum: Studies in Honor of Louis J. Lekai, O. Cist (Cistercian Publications, 1993). "

Crusaders and Crusading in the Twelfth Century

This volume brings together revised and up-dated versions of Giles Constable's classic essays on crusading in the 12th century, along with two major new studies on the cross of the crusaders and the Fourth Crusade, and two excursuses on the terminology of crusading and the numbering of the crusades. Together they show the range and depth of the crusading movement at that time and its influence on the broader history of the period.

This volume features articles which employ source-work research to trace Kierkegaard's understanding and use of authors from the Patristic and Medieval traditions. It covers an extraordinarily long period of time from Cyprian and Tertullian in the second century to Thomas à Kempis in the fifteenth. Despite its heterogeneity and diversity in many aspects, this volume has a clear point of commonality in all its featured sources: Christianity. Kierkegaard's relation to the Patristic and Medieval traditions has been a rather neglected area of research in Kierkegaard studies. This is somewhat surprising given the fact that the young Kierkegaard learned about the Patristic authors during his stud...
