Fishery Science and Management
This volume is concerned with the role of science in fishery management. While this has traditionally been considered as largely a biological problem with clear biological objectives, close examination suggests that management decisions are largely controlled by political, social and economic considerations, biologically constrained. The biologist now has the task of reducing the uncertainties of the venture rather than determining its priorities or its allocation of benefits. The uncertainties arise in part because of lack of understanding of the ecological systems involved, the limited availability of critical information, and the unpredictability of driving forces. The volume reviews the assumptions and simplifications of fishery models, examines the decision making framework in fishery management, and compares management practices in North America, Japan, and Northern Europe. A compilation of fishery management objectives in international agreements and U.S. laws is included.
Fish Reproductive Biology
Fish recruitment is a key process for maintaining sustainable fish populations. In the marine environment, fish recruitment is carried out in many different ways, all of which have different life history strategies. Predicting Year-class Strength from the Abundance of Age-0 Rockfish
"The Groundfish Analysis Investigation of the Tiburon Laboratory conducts an annual survey of age-0 rockfish (Genus Sebastes). A major long-term goal of these surveys is to estimate the strength of a year class based on their abundance at age 0. This requires that a positive relationship between recruitment to the fishery and age-0 abundance be established. Fostering Internationalism through Marine Science
This book describes the work of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) since its launch 1992. Mapping the evolution of its agenda gives insight into the development of modern marine science in the context of competing demands of stakeholders within and outside the organization. The opening chapter consider the challenges of marine science as a large scale, and places PICES in the contexts of internationalism and science-based resource management. They also lay out the organization’s longstanding focus on the development of climate science and its applications. Subsequent chapters explore the pros and cons of national vs. international science, negotiating the nature of investigation and cooperation across scientific, political and institutional boundaries in the region; national perspectives on purpose, scope, and mandates; assessing two major initiatives undertaken to date; the challenges of incorporating social science into an organization of mainly natural scientists.

Computers in Fisheries Research
In 1989 we were asked by Dr Vidar Wespestad (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. National Marine Fisheries Service. Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Seattle. USA) to prepare and convene a session at the 1992 World Fisheries Congress in Athens. Greece on computer appli cations in fisheries. We agreed that the idea was a good one and the computer session turned out to be very successful. The computer session was organized in three parts: training classes. informal demonstrations accompanied by posters. and oral presentations of scientific papers.
