In 1977, the author was taken to Castlereagh Interrogation Centre, Belfast, and was tortured for four days in an attempt to elicit confessions to terrorism. In 1980 O'Connor made history by becoming the first person to win a civil case for torture against the Royal Ulster Constabulary. In this book, Bernard O'Connor tells of the trauma he suffered at the hands of the state and charts his triumphant recovery to a new life.

Over time, a product made in a specific place can develop a unique reputation. This reputation is often due to special characteristics present in the place: its people, its climate and its landscape. There are thousands of examples. In the food and drinks sector there are fruits and vegetables, wines, cheeses and cured meats: Champagne; Chedder, Parma ham and Tipperary turnips. In manufacturers there are Persian carpets, Murano glass, Toledo steel and Japanese electronics. Should all these reputations be protected by law and if so how? This book "The Law of Geographical Indications" addresses these questions. The book examines what names can and cannot be protected in national and internatio...

During the Second World War, the British military and intelligence agencies had plans in case Germany invaded Spain and Portugal. This involved training British and Spanish agents to be secretly infiltrated to undertake sabotage operations on important lines of communication and liaising with pro-British locals. At the same time the Abwehr, Germany's military intelligence agency, paid young Spanish and Portuguese collaborators to undertake sabotage missions against Allied military and economic targets in Iberia but they had limited success. Italian saboteurs from the Decima Flotigglia MAS were more successful using underwater divers to attack Allied shipping. Using declassified files from Britain's National Archives, autobiographies, biographies and newspaper articles, this documentary history sheds new light on an unusual aspect of Iberian history telling a human story of international diplomacy, political intrigue, secret agents, clandestine warfare, military strategy, nationalism, and deception.

Mawddach Crescent is an isolated row of eight three-storey, Victorian houses situated in a secluded cove with glorious views across the Mawddach estuary, North Wales. Very few are aware of its existence. Not on a main road, it is only seen by walkers or cyclists on the Mawddach Trail, those travelling from Dolgellau to Barmouth on the north side of the estuary, or by people using the river. Those who stay or visit this beautiful spot in North Wales will not fail to be surprised. Having visited the Crescent for over twenty years, I have enjoyed researching its history and the lives of some of its former residents.

A “dazzling and gorgeously written” novel of art, faith, and life-changing friendship inspired by the correspondence of Flannery O’Connor and Robert Lowell (Ann Packer). In the summer of 1957, two writers are immersed in their craft at an artist’s colony nestled in upstate New York when chance brings them together. Frances, a country northerner, as committed to her solitude as she is her faith, and Bernard, a gregarious Bostonian with a propensity towards mania and grand gestures, find themselves forming a friendship, and then a courtship, as they each discover a kindred spirit beneath the obvious differences between them. But, as they become inexorably entwined in each other’s liv...
