We live in a world of brands. Brands play a crucial role in business competition, but have also become an important social phenomenon. Brands are represented by signs and symbols, gestures and images. They stand for values, hopes and desires, for experiences and expectations. They evoke emotions and associations. Branding From A to Z is a purely visual crash course in the essence and impact of brands, alphabetically pairing symbols with images, so that the "C" of Campbell's Soup is paired with a photograph of Che Guevara; the "D" of Disney with a whimsical portrait of Salvador Dalí; the sign for the Euro with Albert Einstein's mug; McDonald's Golden Arches with Marilyn Monroe, skirt aflutter over a gusting grate; the royal blue "Q" of Q-Tips with the even more royal Queen Elizabeth II; and all the way to the swishy "Z" of Zurich Insurance, paired with Frank Zappa, who sits quizzically upon a toilet.

In Monumental Sounds, Matthew G. Shoaf examines interactions between sight and hearing in spectacular church decoration in Italy between 1260 and 1320. In this "age of vision," authorities' concerns about whether and how worshipers listened to sacred speech spurred Giotto and other artists to reconfigure sacred stories to activate listening and ultimately bypass phenomenal experience for attitudes of inner receptivity. New naturalistic styles served that work, prompting viewers to give voice to depicted speech and guiding them toward spiritually fruitful auditory discipline. This study reimagines narrative pictures as site-specific extensions of a cultural system that made listening a meaningful practice. Close reading of religious texts, poetry, and art historiography augments Shoaf's novel approach to pictorial naturalism and art's multisensorial dimensions. This book has received the Weiss-Brown Publication Subvention Award from the Newberry Library. The award supports the publication of outstanding works of scholarship that cover European civilization before 1700 in the areas of music, theater, French or Italian literature, or cultural studies.

Women Architects and Politics

In the late 1960s, the feminist scholar Kate Millet broadly defined »politics« as arrangements of power which enable individuals collectively to assert authority over others. Taking this definition, case studies by scholars from Europe, Israel and the United States explore the gendered professional in the 20th century as she navigated arrangements of power including organised religion, emancipation movements, cultural norms and shifting forms of government to practice architecture. Additional contributions reflect upon power structures in contemporary architectural education, practice and history to propose other means of architectural knowledge, representation and professional activity.
