De verschrikkelijke jaren tachtig
De jaren tachtig. De verteller woont in een woongroep, het restant van een communistische commune, samen met zijn moeder, drie andere vrouwen, wat kinderen en goeroe Bert. De kinderen worden min of meer aan hun lot overgelaten terwijl de volwassenen veel met elkaar praten (het liefst naakt - 'Als je naakt bent, heb je geen schild,' zegt Bert), therapie doen, ruziemaken, en opnieuw met elkaar praten (weer naakt). Aan hun lerares op school hebben ze ook niets, want die gaat ook met Bert naar bed. De enige met wie de verteller enigszins kan opschieten, is Donnie. Als de kinderbescherming dreigt in te grijpen en de volwassenen allemaal in paniek raken, vat de verteller het plan op om samen met Donnie weg te lopen. Naar België. Want daar is de mayo beter.

Bert Natter schetst in zijn derde roman een ingenieus en levendig beeld van een van de geheimzinnigste personages uit de muziekgeschiedenis: Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. Volgens de overlevering zou Goldberg het wonderkind zijn voor wie Johann Sebastian Bach zijn beroemde Goldberg Variaties heeft geschreven, maar in de geschiedenisboeken ontbreekt van hem ieder spoor. In zijn roman scheert Bert Natter langs de smalle grens van geschiedschrijving en verbeelding. Hij neemt de lezer mee op reis door de straten van het achttiende-eeuwse Dresden, op dat moment het centrum van Europa op het gebied van kunst en cultuur, en slaagt er met verve in om de muzikale schim genaamd Goldberg tot leven te wekken.
