Colonial Wounds/Postcolonial Repair
This companion volume to the Colonial Wounds/Postcolonial Repair exhibition at James Madison University's Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art contributes to debates about monuments, historical amnesia, and memories of war and colonialism. It includes essays by co-curators Maureen G. Shanahan and Beth Hinderliter and by internationally renowned Algerian artist Amina Menia, whose installation Monuments in Exile: An Infinite Page of Marble Writing was created especially for the exhibition and interrogates collective memory, the specter of the past, and the possibilities for resignifying the monuments and denuded plinths that remain in Algeria. The authors examine the wounds of World War I and the legacy of French colonial monuments constructed in Algeria, many of which were dismantled, defaced, or repurposed after the revolution in 1962. This volume is beautifully illustrated with rare color images from 1916 to 1919 by Jules Gervais-Courtellemont and color lantern slides by the Lumière brothers, as well as little-known French and German photography and medical illustrations from the era.

Female Corpses in Crime Fiction
This book examines the central significance of sexualized female corpses in modern and contemporary Hispanic and Anglophone crime fiction. Beginning with the foundational detective fictions of the nineteenth century, it draws from diverse subgenres to describe a transatlantic tradition of necropornography characterized by lascivious interest in female cadavers, dissection, morgues, femicide, and snuff movies. Hard-boiled and police procedural classics from the U.S. and the U.K. are juxtaposed with texts by established Spanish and Spanish American genre masters and with obscure works that prefigure the contemporary transmedial boom in corpse-centered fictions. The rhetoric and aesthetics of necropornographic crime fiction are related to those of popular crime journalism and forensic-science television dramas. This study argues that crime fiction has long fixated disproportionately on the corpses of beautiful young white women and continues to treat their deaths and autopsies as occasions for male visual pleasure, male subjective self-affirmation and male homosocial bonding.
The Deaths of Henri Regnault
This is the first book in many years about the nineteenth-century French artist Henri Regnault. Controversial and celebrated in his day, Regnault did not live long. He died at the age of 28 in the Franco-Prussian War, becoming a hero of the French nation. What sets him apart from the more conventional members of the French academy is his great skill in painting "Oriental"--exotic--subjects and doing so in a highly materialistic vein designed to produce, through elements like gold paint, garish colors, and odd details, blatant amusement for the eye. In a word, his images are both delightful and awful. Gotlieb's book combines biography, history, and comparative readings of works by Regnault with those by other French artists such as Delacroix, Fromentin, and Renoir. It also, importantly, explores the afterlives of Regnault as a cultural and artistic figure, as well as his diminishment during the rise of modernism and his eventual demise in the history of art.
