Traces
Traces keep time and make the past visible. As such, they continue to be a fundamental resource for scientific knowledge production in modernity. While the art of trace reading is a millennia-old practice, tracings are specifically produced in the photographic archive or in the scientific laboratory. The material traces of the forms represent the objects and causes to which they owe their existence while making them invisible at the moment of their visualization. By looking at different techniques for the production of traces and their changes over two centuries, the contributions show the continuities they have, both in the laboratories and in large colliders of particle physics. This volume, inspired by Carlo Ginzburg’s early works, formulates a theory of traces for the 21st century.
Spuren
Spuren halten die Zeit als Form fest und machen Vergangenes gegenwärtig sichtbar. Als solche sind sie auch in der Moderne ein fundamentales Mittel der wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisgewinnung geblieben. Doch während die Kunst des Spurenlesens eine jahrtausendealte Praxis darstellt, werden Spurbildungen im fotografischen Archiv oder im naturwissenschaftlichen Labor gezielt hervorgebracht. Dabei ersetzen die materiellen Spurformen nicht selten jene Gegenstände und Ursachen, denen sie ihre Existenz verdanken und die sie im Moment ihrer Vergegenwärtigung unsichtbar machen. Indem die Beiträge des Bandes die verschiedenen Techniken der Erzeugung von Spuren und ihre Veränderungen im Laufe von zwei Jahrhunderten in den Blick nehmen, können sie zugleich aufzeigen, welche Kontinuitäten diese im digitalen Zeitalter oder in der physikalischen Großforschung aufweisen.
Die Familie unter dem Mikroskop
Wie eine bahnbrechende Entdeckung der Zellbiologie die Geschlechterhierarchie infrage stellte. Wenn Spermium und Eizelle sich bei der Zeugung vereinigen, geben beide ihr Erbmaterial an den Embryo weiter. Dieser seinerzeit revolutionäre biologische Befund von 1875 hatte weitreichende Folgen, nicht zuletzt für das Erb- und Familienrecht. Denn aus der Erkenntnis, dass väterliche und mütterliche Anteile an die Nachkommen weitergegeben werden, resultierten politische Fragen der Gleichberechtigung und der Verteilungsgerechtigkeit. Solche Themen waren speziell im Deutschen Kaiserreich virulent, als zwischen 1870 und 1900 das Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch entstand. Das BGB legte die Grundlage für das Verständnis von Familie als biologischer Einheit, Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft und von geschlechtlicher Arbeitsteilung, wie sie bis in das 21. Jahrhundert hinein wirksam geblieben ist.
Epistemologie und Differenz
Welche Kategorien und Prozesse haben teil am Wandel der Reproduktion des Wissens? Und: Wie hat sich das Wissen über Reproduktion seinerseits geschichtlich gewandelt? Dieser transdisziplinäre Band beleuchtet das Verhältnis von Wissen und Reproduktion in so unterschiedlichen Feldern und Räumen wie Labor, Weberei und Theater, Kritischer Weißseinsforschung, Anthropologie und Mathematik. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass auch die Entwicklung von Neuem Wiederholung und Differenz erfordert. Sie plädieren für ein reflektierendes »Wieder-Holen«, das Differenz produktiv macht.
Genetisierung der Zeugung
Dieser Band fokussiert die Zukunft der Gen- und Reproduktionstechnologien, wie sie sich in befürwortenden biowissenschaftlichen Diskursen findet. Es wird gezeigt, wie an der Jahrtausendwende Gentechnologie und Befruchtungsverfahren diskursiv miteinander verbunden und Gesetze in Frage gestellt werden. Aufgezeigt werden fundamentale Veränderungen in der Begründung reproduktiver Gentechnologie als Standard-Fortpflanzungsmöglichkeit und emanzipatives Instrument. Diese Verschiebungen reichen von der Fürsprache für gleichgeschlechtliche Zeugung bis zu einem genetischen Gesundheitsbegriff. Das Verständnis dieser Verschiebungen ist unerlässlich für Wissenschaft, Medien und vorausschauende Politik.
Science in Color
Color makes its way into natural science images as early as the research process. It serves for self-reflection and for communication within the scientific community. However, color does not follow a standard in the natural sciences: its meaning is contingent, even though culturally conditioned. Digital publishing enhances the use of color in scientific publications; at the same time, globalization promotes the idea of universal color symbolism. This book investigates the function of color in historical and current visualizations for scientific purposes, its epistemic role as a tool, and its long neglect due to symbolic and gender-specific connotations. The publication thus closes a research gap in the natural sciences and the humanities.
