Receptive Multilingualism
Receptive multilingualism refers to the language constellation in which interlocutors use their respective mother tongue while speaking to each other. Since the mid-nineties receptive multilingualism is promoted by the European commission on par with other possibilities of increasing the mobility of the European citizens. Throughout the last ten years a marked increase in the research on this topic has been observable. This volume reveals new perspectives from different theoretical frameworks on linguistic analyses of receptive multilingualism in Europe. Case studies are presented from contemporary settings, along with analyses of historical examples, theoretical considerations and, finally, descriptions of didactical concepts established in order to transfer and disseminate receptive multilingual competence. The book contains results from research carried out at the Research Center on Multilingualism at the University of Hamburg as well as contributions by various international scholars working in the field of receptive multilingualism.
Der C-Test: Beiträge aus der aktuellen Forschung
C-Tests bestehen aus mehreren kurzen Texten, in denen fehlende Wortteile zu rekonstruieren sind. C-Tests haben hervorragende psychometrische Eigenschaften und werden in einer Vielzahl von Kontexten zur validen und ökonomischen Messung allgemeiner Sprachkompetenz eingesetzt. Dieser Sammelband illustriert den aktuellen Stand der C-Test-Forschung - mit einem Schwerpunkt auf folgenden Aspekten: Validität von C-Tests; Rasch-Modelle für C-Test-Daten; Zuordnung von C-Test-Ergebnissen zum Gemeinsamen europäischen Referenzrahmen für Sprachen. C-Tests consist of several short texts in which the missing parts of words have to be reconstructed. C-Tests have excellent psychometric properties and are used in many contexts as valid and economical tests of general language proficiency. This collection of papers illustrates the state of the art of C-Test research, with a special focus on the following issues: validity of C-Tests; Rasch measurement models for C-Test data; relating C-Test results to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
English as a lingua franca in business negotiations
This dissertation contributes to the study of English as a lingua franca in business negotiations focussing, among other aspects, on the pragmatic functions of conditionals. What sets English as a lingua franca apart from other forms of usage? Is there a regularity to the use of conditionals? What functions do different forms of conditionals have in lingua franca English business negotiation? The author uses business encounters recorded at an international music trade fair as her data and shows that non-standard as well as standard conditionals are used in different phases of business negotiations to indicate different degrees of commitment. Bettina Dresemann is a teacher of English and Spanish and has worked as a lecturer for English and Applied Linguistics at the Universities of Münster, Erfurt and Bochum. She is a passionate linguist and traveller, taught German as a Second Language in Germany and the USA and is currently living in Brazil. The current book is the published version of her PhD dissertation in Applied Linguistics (Sprachlehrforschung) presented at the University of Münster.

English as a Lingua Franca in Higher Education
With English-medium higher education burgeoning in Europe and elsewhere outside the English-speaking world, this book is the first to offer an ethnographically-embedded analysis of such classroom discourse by taking cognizance of English functioning as a lingua franca (ELF) in international student groups. By virtue of investigating one such educational programme in its entirety, the study also enlarges the present knowledge on ELF discourse as it offers novel insights into the interactional dynamics that shape and develop an educational community of practice.
