Expedition to Blue Cave

FROM THE BLOG OF CAM WALKER My friends and I call ourselves the Outriders. It's not like a club of anything, we just all hate the idea of ever being BORED, and when we set our minds on something, we don't ask anyone's permission, we just DO IT. There's this place called Blue Cave, which glows blue ONCE EVERY SEVEN YEARS (phosphorescent plankton!). So obviously, we had to get there. But first we had to do three HUGE things: 1 ENACT THE "FREE SHELBY" PLAN 2 "SCAVENGE" (NOT STEAL, THERE'S A DIFFERENCE) THE GEAR WE NEED TO CROSS TWELVE MILES OF OPEN OCEAN 3 BE HOME BY 7:00 P.M. My plan wasn't great, since it relied on a lot of luck. But everything worked perfectly -- except that Shelby's sister got kidnapped. But that's a longer story.

City Living

City Living is about urban spaces, urban dwellers, and how these spaces and people make, shape, and change one another. More people live in cities than ever before: more than 50% of the earth's people are urban dwellers. As downtown cores gentrify and globalize, they are becoming more diverse than ever, along lines of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexuality, and age. Meanwhile, we are in the early stages of what seems sure to be a period of intense civil unrest. During such periods, cities generally become the primary sites where tensions and resistance are concentrated, negotiated, and performed. For all of these reasons, understanding cities and contemporary city living is pressing...

Maestros in America

Maestros in America: Conductors in the 21st Century provides short biographical and critical essays of over 100 American conductors-and conductors in America-in the twenty-first century. Roderick L. Sharpe and Jeanne Koekkoek Stierman made their selections based on three categories of persons: American-born; naturalized US citizens; and foreign conductors holding a permanent appointment in the US. In addition, all individuals included had to have been active as conductors at the start of the new millennium. These criteria allowed the authors to incorporate up-and-comers as well as those more established, offering an extensive cross-section of the upper echelons of the conducting profession f...

Hidden Multilingualism in 19th-Century European Literature

The disparagement of multilingualism is a European development of the 18th and 19th centuries in which one national language and national literature were advocated, established and institutionalised. Multilingual writers made use of the creative potential of several languages even then. However, they often adapted to an increasingly monolingual book market, which made their individual multilingualism invisible. This is evident in literary historiography which established a monolingual national canon. Researching hidden multilingualism is often difficult: since multilingual texts by multilingual writers were often not published or were published in a monolingual version, sources are scarce. L...

Nelson Algren

"Ernest Hemingway predicted that he would 'rank among our best American novelists.' Malcolm Cowley hailed him as Carl Sandburg's successor, dubbing him 'the poet of the Chicago slums.' In A 1950 his classic novel The Man with the Golden Arm earned him the first National Book Award; in 1974 he received the Award of Merit for the Novel from the American Academy of Arts and Letters--an honor previously bestowed on only Nabokov, Mann, Huxley, Dreiser, Hemingway, and O'Hara. And the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir pledged her eternal love in a transatlantic affair that was one of the century's most romantic and passionate. Yet until now, Nelson Algren, the Chicago-born author of five novels, s...
