Most (if not all) Grenadians have grown up hearing stories of la diablesse, lagahou and sookooyant. But have you ever wondered about the origin of these stories? This book just doesn't re-tell these stories. It traces their origins, and looks at them as being influential in helping shape our self-identity and our interpersonal relationship. In fact, this book examines and critiques aspects of the Grenadian sociocultural and sociopolitical culture that seek, in many ways, to minimize and suppress the individual's search for self-identity especially as he or she tries to pursue knowledge that appears to be outside the socially accepted. In doing so, this book follows the author's journey as he analyzes old ideas and engaged with new ones. Also central to this book is that it seeks to help the individual develop his or her moral and ethical awareness.

First Published in 1968. Sir Richard Steele's plays and major periodicals have been reprinted in modern times. But the miscellaneous tracts and pamphlets, which in his own day in the eighteenth century, ran into many editions and made his name famous, must now be sought out in antiquarian book shops and, one here, one there, in university libraries. To bring them all together for rereading is the purpose of this collected edition.

Grenada in Wartime

Have you ever looked up at the sky and seen a huge object coming towards you which you could not identify? Have you ever wondered what would happen if your country could import or export nothing at all? Have you experienced what it is like to have a loved one leave home and never come back? Have you ever waited months on end for a boat arrive that never does? For 60 years to pass and so many questions still left unanswered? Located in the Caribbean, one would think that Grenada was geographically distant from the chaos that was World War II. But the war not only significantly altered the daily lives of hundreds of Grenadians, but also influenced the culture of the Spice Isle as we know it to...

Toleration and State Institutions

Toleration and State Institutions explores the rise of more charitable British policy toward Catholics in Ireland and in Quebec during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Applying a historical institutionalist approach, Karen Stanbridge demonstrates that "Catholic relief" arose more gradually, and encountered less opposition, than is generally maintained. Her careful analysis shows that the growth of toleration among political lites, and the concerns of administrators wishing to secure the allegiance of Catholic subjects, were only two of many factors leading to the development of policy kinder to Catholics. Toleration and State Institutions sheds new light on the official treatment (and mistreatment) of minorities at home during the height of British expansion abroad, offering a fascinating example of the divisions and rapprochements that characterize the relationship between state and society.
