Policing Europe
Developments in European police co-operation have become sharply focused in the last few years. Policing Europe critically examines the historical development of forms of co-operation and their traditional justifications: terrorism, illegal immigration, drug trafficking and other cross-border crime. It is argued that a full understanding of the new policing of Europe needs to take account of the linking of such justifications with the more diffuse debate around removal of border controls and free movement of people. The book suggests that a new European policework is emerging, and examines the implications of this phenomenon.

Japan's Prosecution Review Commission
This book explains Japan’s unique Prosecution Review Commission (PRC) which is composed of eleven lay people selected randomly from voter registration lists. Each of the country’s 165 PRCs reviews non-charge decisions made by professional prosecutors and determines which cases should be reinvestigated or charged. PRCs also provide prosecutors with general proposals and recommendations for improving their policies and practices. Governance, Social Control and Legal Reform in China
This book outlines how community sentences and early release options are administered in China. Chen provides empirical insights into the emerging community sector of the Chinese penal system, and illustrates how Chinese criminal courts decide between imprisonment and community sentences. Drawing on interviews with government and non-governmental supervisors, this methodological and rigorous study offers an in-depth discussion of the enforcement of these community sanctions and measures (CSM). By using the CSM reform as an example, this book illustrates the adaptation of Chinese governance and social control. Ultimately, Chen argues that the current model of governance in China (disciplinary governance) cannot guarantee an effective state-agent relationship; it also denies local governments sufficient legitimacy to secure social stability.
