Preaching the Fear of God in a Fear-Filled World
Fear runs rampant in the world today, including fears related to the rise of nationalism, refugees, political corruption, violence, religious extremism, and climate crises. Amid these existential realities, the biblical idea of "the fear of God" poses theological opportunities and challenges for those who address these themes in their preaching and public ministry. This collection of conference presentations from the 2018 meeting of Societas Homiletica focuses on how preaching and homiletical studies around the world address the rhetorical, biblical, political, and spiritual dimensions of fear as it has emerged in recent decades in church and society.
Practice, Practice Theory and Theology
How might practice theories and engagement with practice contribute to and advance theological study of religion and religious life and practices? This volume explores and discusses how theological engagement with practice, theoretically as well as empirically, might profit from theories of practice developed in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, education and organisational studies during the recent decades, but so far scarcely employed within theology. In part I, the volume unfolds key components of practice theory, especially as they have more recently been developed within sociological practice theories, reflect on their significance and potential with regard to theology. The Notion of Turning in Metaphysical Poetry
In "Metaphysical Poetry", there is an emphasis on religious experience, which often touches on diverse kinds of turning. Crossing Boundaries in Early Modern England
Between 1500 and 1700, eight very different English translations of Kempis's Imitatio were published in about 70 editions, crossing boundaries of language, confessional affiliation, and literary genre. This study explores the ways in which biblicism and inwardness, so typical of the Latin original work, are subject to creative transformations by the English translators. Thus, the translations reflect and even influence more general tendencies in the wider corpus of early modern English literature, for example in the works of George Herbert, John Bunyan, and early English Bible translations.
