Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery 7

The increasing importance of stereotactic surgery in the management of common neurological conditions is illustrated by the broad applications of stereotactic techniques described in this book. International authorities present their most up-to-date experience in the fields of movement disorder, tumours, epilepsy, and pain and spasticity. The integration of modern imaging techniques with stereotactic instrumentation is a particular feature. The book provides the most modern description of the techniques and applications of an expanding field of neurosurgery.

Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery 10

These proceedings from the Xth Congress of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in Stockholm reflect the growing interest in these fields of neurosurgery. It is the most extensive volume in this series of publications and it contains a large number of original articles pertaining to the most recent advances in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. Not long ago stereotactic neurosurgery was considered an esoteric sub speciality practised only by those involved in treating movement disorders and pain. In the last decade we have witnessed the incorporation of stereotactic methodology in the management of common neurosurgical diseases, and the stereotactic techni...

Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery 11

This volume contains selected contributions from the XIth Meeting of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery held in September 1994 in Antalyaffurkey. Most of the papers deal with the many therapeutic and technical advancements made in this field of neurosurgery. The emergence of new stereotactic methodologies such as frameless stereotaxy and other forms of neuronavigation have become an indispensable tool for all types of neurosurgical operations. An increasing number of young neurosurgeons takes an interest in the neurosurgical approaches to the treatment of movement disorders, chronic pain and epilepsy. This is a clear sign ofthe growing awareness of the long neg...

Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery 8

The last ten years has witnessed a resurgence of interest in stereotactic surgery although this has been mainly in the field of the comparatively simple stereotactic biopsy of intracranial tumours. There is also evidence of a returning interest in functional neurosurgery other than pain which has always sustained high levels of endeavour. The present work comprises selected papers from a much larger group of interesting and important communications to the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. They represent modern views on a wide variety of stereotactic surgical topics from internationally acclaimed experts in this field. The neurosurgeon who has little or no acquain...

Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery 9

The book gives the most up-to-date information for the expanding field of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery from European and international experts. The newest developments in neural transplantation and stereotactic irradiation are included together with the reports on extensive trials of analgesic surgery and new techniques used in the treatment of a variety of functional disorders.

This publication consists of 49 papers selected among the 160 presentations given at the 10th meeting of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in September 1992 in Stockholm. The papers have been selected on basis of novelty, originality and scientific technique and application, radiosurgery, pain and epilepsy. Some of the papers are given by invited experts in the field. Clinical, technical and theoretical aspects are dealt with. New techniques are presented on pain treatment, alleviation of tremor, usuage of navigator technique in stereotactic operations, radiosurgery of AVM, acoustic neurinomas and epilepsy, gliomas and on surgical technique in treatment of epilepsy. Some papers deal with basic neurobiological aspects of neurotransplantation, pain and radiosurgery. This publication is of interest to neurosurgeons utilizing stereotactic techniques practising radiosurgery and being involved in the treatment of movement disorders, pain and epilepsy. Since many papers are dedicated to basic neurobiological aspects of neurotransplantation and pain, the publication is also of interest to neuroscientists in general.

Intervening in the Brain

The wealth of insights into the brain’s functioning gained by neuroscience in recent years led to the development of new possibilities for intervening in the brain such as neurotransplantation, neural prostheses and brain stimulation techniques. Moreover, new and safer classes of psychopharmaceutical drugs lend themselves to neuroenhancement applications, i.e. they could be used to enhance cognitive capacities or emotional well-being without therapeutic need. This book offers extensive state-of-the-art accounts for these novel kinds of intervention, indicates future developments, and discusses the relevant philosophical, ethical and legal issues.

This series of books, "Readings from the Encyclopedia of Neuroscience." consists of collections of subject-clustered articles taken from the Encyclopedia of Neuroscience. The Encyclopedia of Neuroscience is a reference source and compendium of more than 700 articles written by world authorities and covering all of neuroscience. We define neuroscience broadly as including all those fields that have as a primary goal the under standing of how the brain and nervous system work to mediate/control behavior, including the mental behavior of humans. Those interested in specific aspects of the neurosciences, particular subject areas or specialties, can of course browse through the alphabetically arr...
