Time/Image explores the interrelationship of time and thought in contemporary art. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue take Gilles Deleuze's concept of "the time-image" as an open provocation and loose philosophical framework to consider contemporary practices shaping perception of time as a tangible and active force in the world. The selected artists and filmmakers understand time expansively rather than quantitatively. They revisit historical narratives and inherited genealogies to interrogate the chronologies governing how we live and to propose new attachments and hypothetical futures. The oeuvre of Mel Chin (b. 1951 in Houston) encompasses a wide variety of media including sculpture, video, drawing, painting, land art, and performance art. Eschewing a trademark style, the common thread through Chin's practice is his conceptual rigor, thoughtful historicism, and concern for social justice. His land-based works such as Revival Field from the early 1990s and Operation Paydirt (2008-ongoing), garnered significant international press for presenting the science of soil remediation as an art form. Challenging the traditional concept of a retrospective as a linear presentation of a single individual's work over time, the publication celebrates the artist's practice of constant evolution, re-examination, and collaboration. This first volume in the Tate Gallery Liverpool Critical Forum series is derived from a conference held in conjunction with the display of Abstract Expressionist Painting from the USA, which was mounted at Tate Gallery Liverpool from March 1992 to January 1993. The display comprised 21 paintings by 13 artists, including Ad Reinhardt, Norman Lewis, Adolph Gottlieb, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. The objectives of the conference, involving speakers from the international community of scholarship in the field, were: to elicit new observations, critical judgments and proposals from the knowledge base of abstract expressionism and perhaps to challenge some of its prevailing conventions; and to debate the role of the Tate Gallery Liverpool as a modifier of this field of knowledge.

Feast offers the first survey of the artist-orchestrated meal: since the 1930s, the act of sharing food and drink has been used to advance aesthetic goals and foster critical engagement with the culture of the moment. Both exhibition catalogue and reader, this richly illus- trated book offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the art of the meal and its relationship to questions about hospitality, politics, and culture. From the Italian Futurists' banquets in the 1930s, to 1960s and '70s conceptual and performative work, to the global prevalence of socially engaged practices today, Feast considers a diverse group of artists who have transformed the meal into a compelling artistic medium. After an introductory essay by curator Stephanie Smith, the book includes new interviews with over twenty contributing artists and reprinted excerpts of classic texts. On the occasion of his first institutional exhibition in Germany, Gabriel Kuri (*1970, Mexico City) has created four new groups of works, which provide an insight into different aspects of his practice.
