Stagecoach

Sweeping in scope, as revealing of an era as it is of a company, Stagecoach is the epic story of Wells Fargo and the American West, by award-winning writer Philip L. Fradkin. The trail of Wells Fargo runs through nearly every imaginable landscape and icon of frontier folklore: the California Gold Rush, the Pony Express, the transcontinental railroad, the Civil and Indian Wars. From the Great Plains to the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, the company's operations embraced almost all social, cultural, and economic activities west of the Mississippi, following one of the greatest migrations in American history. Fortune seekers arriving in California after the discovery of gold in 1849 couldn't bri...

The Western Horse

This book celebrates the history and culture of the western horse, its ability to capture the popular imagination, and the means by which it has come to symbolize the American West. Beginning in the 1500s, The Western Horse delves into the origins and variations of the western breeds, their role in the expansion and settlement of the West, and the lawless element they attracted. The 1800s is when the stereotypes of Western Americana flourish accompanied by the ever-present horse. The mounted Plains tribes, cavalry, Pony Express, pioneers, stock detectives, cowboys, horse thieves, and the iconic rodeos come into perspective. The book dispels some of the falsehoods of the western horse and replace those inaccuracies with interesting facts. Case in point: many people grow up believing that the wild mustangs are the offspring the conquistador’s horses. While that belief is partially true, it is also partially incorrect. While the conquistadors returned with horses re-introducing them to the American landmass, the Spaniards only rode stallions. The progenitors of the mustangs likely occurred a bit later—lost stock of the Spanish settlers and the missions that returned into the wild.

An Industrial Cocktail

Lord Haslam was a giant of British industry. Widely acclaimed by business and political leaders, he had a remarkable record of reaching the top of the management ladder and staying there. Completing his memoirs while dying from cancer, he tells a compelling business story of the unexpected. Though without academic brilliance or burning ambition, he was singled out as a high-flyer, rising to the top of British industry. Yet his humor still shines through, for asked how he chaired at the same time the two contrasting businesses of sugar and steel, he disarmingly replied, "with difficulty."

From the early 1800s to the end of his life in 1917, Buffalo Bill Cody was as famous as anyone could be. Annie Oakley was his most celebrated protégée, the 'slip of a girl' from Ohio who could (and did) outshoot anybody to become the most celebrated star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Growing up as a preacher's kid (PK) is anything but easy-especially for a boy during the Great Depression when outhouses were plentiful and food was scarce. In scenes reminiscent of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Bob Haslam's life moved from one adventure to another. With his family living during the Great Depression on food stamps in the offering plate, plus living off the land, assisted by Pound Parties where church families brought in pounds of sugar, flour, etc., they somehow managed to survive. Coming of age under such circumstances was enhanced by moral and spiritual formation fostered by Bob's father and mother. As he grew into his teen years, Bob had a dream career all marked out. ...
